I think the article is great but ryan leech has a lame sequence shot. I wish John Websters photo would have made the cut, it was an amazing line that not many riders could pull off. Lots of douche bags on OTN won't reply because they hate morley so they can hate on me now.

If I had a camera I'd take a picture of the cover shot. It says "Trials" in the center of the page,
Ok I'm out time to go surfing tommorow and sleep before the hangover sets in.
Why did you edit the orginal post?
Deletage if no reason.

Pretty sure morley is one of the more respected members of this site...probably the most respected canadian for sure.

i would think that most people would be haters due to mountain biking's shameful track record as a respectable publication.

Morley thinks everyone is against him because the thread got no replies. I spent half my day already tryin to track this magazine down and nothing. Maybe let some copies get into all the stores first before worrying.
As for the Webster picture it is really a great picture. Morley has a low quality version that isn't allowed to leave his computer. Its a great shot with lighting and the whole deal. What makes it a great picture in my opinion is that it isn't a big move that can be measured in inches or feet. He rode up a handrailing thats a bit over bar height and got to rear on the top and hopped off. The pic was snapped of him on his back tire at the top. The catch is the handrailing goes up stairs too, its not level.
Its a really good picture but I personally think because its urban it could be out done by something innovative and creative done in a natural setting.

First post was about the article.. I cant' remember what I said somthing about the article and that its on newstands and that the picture is in someone elses hands and that I tried to get other picture submissions. i'd like to see some comments as there is always talk why there is never any trials coverage and this month there is two articles. Decline just reprinted their story off hans rey's website tho.

cool
maybe things will change for the better? The sooner people realize that we ride seatless use specific bikes to go huge UP is no different than use specific bikes used to go huge DOWN,... the better.

I'd like to go get that. Problem is, I have drive to a book store just to find it.
I'm entirely too lazy to drive 20 minutes for a magazine.
edit: Looks good though

i finally got to see it today. good words morley, definitely good to catch the mainstream up to our world.
i cant say i was all that impressed with the images at points. i'd love to see the one that was going in place of ryan gapping to that rail- impressive riding but the photo i didnt think was up to par with other full page stuff in the mag. also wasnt into the billion image sequences... something i'd rather not see cross over from skate mags.
overall good to see millar at mountain biking now- hopefully his direction will help that mag out- it needs it. and also good to see some trials recognition in the mainstream.

What I thought was pretty cool was that some of the pics were posted on OTN last fall.
http://observedtrials.net/vb/showthread.php?t=20596&highlight=hans
And some of the pics were also in an article in a recent DECLINE issue.

Iam wanted to shoot a sequence with me, I was for less images but he said he liked how the legs were moving all around. The sketch factor was that was shot right when it started raining and there was one gnarly bail going up the first time when my bike slid out. Oh well hopfully we can get some more trials articles in the future.

Yea, I've pushed the Trials in magazines thing before and it all depends on the photographer and whether or not they have an eye for it or have the balls to front the materials in the first place.
Erik, Aki, TRA, Andy and Kevin should just flood the magazine corps with shots just for kicks.

i've sent pics in to places before but you will notice you havent seen any of them in the pages... it's not just about flooding content. i wish it were. if you flip through any of the mags and they have a section of photography you should look at who the pics belong to. in that issue of mountain biking i think three or four pages were harookz. if you go through bike magazine you'll see a ton of stuff from sterling or gibson. if you go through decline it's a ton of spomer/hylands. if a magazine is doing well, they are filling pages with content and editorials- not single pictures. they should have a dozen non-timeline pertinent stories on the back burner to fill pages if they need it. that kind of thing gets published more than unattached single images. also when it comes to "work" and the magazine's budget to pay for content, those page-fill photos are often low to no-pay. priority is given to articles in the budget. that's why those sections are so often filled with staff photogs' leftovers. to this extent who took the photo matters more than who is in it and how good of a shot it really is. it's a matter of convenience that they can run their bro's pic over some one they dont know- someone that the above list of "trials photographers" falls into.
I've tried shopping an article around with some of my personal favorite photos but i got a pretty much universal response that "this is good and all but it doesnt really fit our content model" or something like that. I hope that trials gets "interesting" enough to be featured in more than just a fluke one article here and there (and the back pages of dirt rag back in the time when things got to them). the only real mag supporting it regularly is MBUK- but look at the trials scene in the UK lately!
i hope that i start seeing more success in getting assignments and work shooting gravity racing or mainstream stuff and i'd like to think that i wouldnt just forget about trials as that happens. if i ever do get to having some cred- i'd like to do what i can to spotlight trials more often.
it's going to take a while before cycling media changes the mostly universal attitude of: "trials? oh yeah man trials is awesome! but... what are we supposed to do for it?"
edit- that went way longer than i thought it would.

I finally picked this up today at Barnes and Noble.
Dece article, Morley.
I like that sequence of you: side hop, 180, pedalkick, blah.
I think the sequence shots were overdone, though. I'd also like to see a vid of that kicker 360 whatever that Jeff Lenosky did.
Overall, I'm glad Trials got mainstream exposure in an article that was written well enough to not turn people off, and then some.

I have to agree with you kev, but any content model can sell if it's done right. Even the most remote obscure style of riding can sound amazing if it's presented right. Check out the surfers journal... it has some amazing stories and amazing pictures to complement ones imagination. I wish more magazines were like that. My one complaint is with pro riders writing content, most of them (not all) write as if they've never graduated high school... so until I see some stories that tear through your mind and get you stoked to ride I'm not quite sure what to say. Maybe stay in school?
Does anyone remember Zapata Espinosa, some of his shit stirring was classic.

some pro's do need to stick with riding bikes and not writing articles- agreed. but it sells magazines. joe common-kid loves reading whatever dumb crap pro X has to say. i agree with you that content, no matter how obscure, can fit and be used to sell issues. but the thing is- does a magazine care enough to accomodate a trials article and put that kind of effort in when they can just poop out another "83 helmet shootout" or "omg, look how epic utah is for freeriding" piece?
i've never been wronged by zap but the guy does make me want to punch some faces from time to time.

I'm not saying I agree with what he says, but sometimes you want to read it just to see what he's going to say. Stirring a pot of shit can be good sometimes, if it's done right. Maybe we can never have a great mountain bike magazines living in an ADD generation?

getting trials pictures in stuff is as easy as making money riding trials for a living :hsugh: ...with that said I've taken trials pictures twice in a 15 month period.
then again I just threw out a magazine this japanese chick gave me back in college- the last page is a full size ad with kieta doing a rear wheel move...
