Apparently they're absolutely amazing. My LBS is bringing a bunch of them in next month, and I might have to get some.

I use em' now and they are amazing. Stiff but with rediculous grip, actually took me a while to get used to my foot feeling so glued to the pedal. They last a while too. Go for it.

Had mine for about 9 months now, use them for everything. Excellent grip, no more shin burgers.
Definately reccomend these shoes, couldn't ride in any thing else now. ;)

I have had four pair already since they first came out with the INTENSE brand.
They are ALL I ever use.

I have owned a couple of pairs of FiveTen shoes, though they were the climbing/guide shoes (mountain master, guide tennie, etc). They are just as sticky. My suggestion is to go to an outdoor products store and see if they have closeouts on any FiveTen shoes. They do not have to be labeled as cycling-specific in order to work well.

My friend and I both have them. They're amazing, almost too grippy. I had to re-learn how to put my foot on the pedals for both DH and trials because once it's on there it doesn't move around at all. If you want a shoe with amazing grip, get these.

I really don't like the look of them that much and I've been happy with Vans up until this point, but I might be willing to try them being that so many people like them for riding.
You guys using the Impact low or mid shoes?

i would but im out in oklahoma and there isnt much out here as far as places that have stuff in the store. i have climbed in several diffrent 5.10s. but back home at the rock gym i worked at we didnt sell aproach shoes. and non of the other outdoor stores did sell 5.10. but at the rock gym i work at in my college town they give me a pro deal so the prices isnt too bad. i am thinkin about giving them a go when i have the denero. also need to get myself some new bars. and pedals

Low's. The mids look a bit gay IMO.
Also, try and get the new Sam Hill signature shoe, it looks way better than the plain black.

If you work at a climbing gym you should be able to get la sportiva, I have there cirque pro approach shoes and I am super happy with them.
They have the same type of sole the 5.10's have. Retail they go for 90 bucks so pro deal should be alot better.

how much for those... my "nike´s air force one" are starting to piss me off!!

I used the original 5.10's when I first started trials. I have no idea how anyone can ride with them now, they just feel so thick.
Im sure its just getting used to it, but they're too much for me.

I too have been pondering the 510's lately. Out of all the cycling-specific (non clipless) shoes, the 510s stood out to me the most for some reason.
After all these positive responses, I'll probably drop the cash for them as my next pair.

Anyone comment on Rush's post?
IMO, thicker = better.
I used New Balances for a while and the sole was too thin. I go as far as putting extra thick footbeds (on top of the OE ones) in my current shoes, which are Globes.

Oh my god dude, I have NO IDEA how you rode with New Balances. They have huge arch in them, so your foot touches like 1 pin. They have zero grip, and zero feel. I tried riding in them for about a minute before realizing they should never, ever, touch bike pedals.
Any skate shoe is at least a million times better.

I too ride flimsy shoes, so I was kind of shying away from these. What about the approach shoes? Are they as thick as the freeride shoes?

My wide feet ride with 5-10 High Impact and really like it. When they are new, they feel quite stiff. But as the break in, they get a little softer and you get used to the thickness of the sole and the stickiness of the rubber. I tried using the Guide Tennies (5-10 approach shoe) for trials, but they are way too sticky. If you use platforms with pins, you'll be fighting to seperate your foot from your pedal.
I also use the Ribo shoes for trials. They seem to fit a little smaller than my old Monty shoes, but they have better feel and response than any street shoe.

How do the soles on these shoes feel as far as thickness & flexibilities go? I'm looking for the pair of Airwalk's I had. Just bought Van's and the soles are thick & can't really feel where my feet is at on the pedals.

Aki, are you a size ten?
If so you can borrow one of my pair for a ride. I've got two pair of the black ones. I gave a pair each of the Intense model to Dan and Kris,.. they never complained.
I was quite fasion envious of your black and white Vans yesterday. Guess I need to get some white laces.

I'd love to have those for DH, but they look far too burly for trials IMO.

They don't feel thick like sneakers do they? That's the only problem and even the Vans I bought. Hate 'em. I just want something thin & grippy.
Speaking of which when did Airwalk become a Payless Shoe brand? (seems like the only place that really stocks them now) Guess it's a good thing...$20 shoes ftw :D

firewrx... You have a pair of these, don't you?
I rode with the Intense-labeled version of these 5.Tens several years ago. I thought they made pretty good comp shoes, especially in wet conditions, but as was stated above, I found them almost too grippy on the pedals - even in the wet. I definitely prefer a plain old pair of well-broken-in BMX/skate shoes - Orchid is my brand of choice at the moment. If I ever comp'd again, I would be curious to try some triasin specific shoes, but for now, I'll keep it simple.

I haven't ridden too many different shoes but newer/thicker shoes definately grip better. However, I like thinner/older worn in shoes where you can feel where the pedal is on your foot/shoe, even tho it may not grip as good I feel like I can ride better knowing where my foot is on the pedal.

What's with the "too much grip" thing. I like my shins leak proof. I have a hard enough time with all the other bangups I don't need shin slappers from the meat tenderizers on the end of my cranks.
"Where is the pedal?"
Dude: look down, put foot on pedal. Ride.
Or if you are mid section, just kick your ankle a little to feel where the axle is and re-adjust.
If it doesn't work for you ,.. meh.

Seriously, with the 5.10's I put my foot on the pedal where I want it and it doesn't move until I lift it off.
If I put my foot in the wrong place but can't change it, it doesn't mean shit, cos even if I only had a quarter of my foot on the pedal, they grip so well its not going anywhere.
Did some shuttles the other day and remembered why they are so good for DH.

the last on their climbing shoes is way too narrow for my feets, I don't think that's any help at all towards these shoes, but it seems like la sportiva has foot design down pat. it's all i'll climb in.

Havn't used climbing shoes yet.
As far as those of you who want thin soles, check out the 5-10 approach shoes. That is the way to get sticky rubber in a ninjaslipper feel. I still have mine, but save them for sockless summer days. I'll probly bring them to OTNeast with me.

What size are they, I want to try them out if you bring them to otneast.
As I said I haven't tried much, I usually don't ride in new shoes untill the get worn out just cause I want them to last longer (which proly doesn't really help much). I'll try riding in my new shoes next ride and see if I change my mind ;)
The whole idea of trials shoes (in the past tense) was to be as stiff as possible, thin, grippy etc. It gives so much better feel for what youre riding on, also when trackstanding, you can feel minute differences in movement on the pedal.
I use cheap, flat, metrosexual crepe soled /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ shoes. I have had one pair last me for 2 years. They would still be awesome but they got too flexible.
It spins me out that everyone says how they like their shoes as flexy/thick as possible. Completely strange in my opinion.

rush i dunno about the flexy/thick thing. but what i want is the flexy thin. i rode some stiff shoes and just didnt feel like i was in control. almost like i couldnt wrap my feet when makin moves.
lucky13
01-18-2007, 01:20 PM
Flexy thin is the worst of both worlds. Unless you have retarted feet.
Rush is right. Problem is that stiffness usually results in thick. Unless you have some sweet steel shanks in your sole.

I've used a bunch of fiveten shoes. My all time favorites for riding were the Access trail running shoe. After the EVA packed out they got thin and flexy and they're super grippy. I have the high top freeride shoes, they're good for DH, but too stiff for trials, grippy as hell though. The next shoe that I want is the Retro tennie, they are really thin and flexible, comfy and grippy...and if queer looks have any indication of performance they should rock like real trials shoes...

Yea, I saw those and would like to try them but I currently have two pair of Freerides and one pair of approach tennies besides the metrosexual addidas my cute (now ex) girly friend bought me....
I don't want to be a shoe whore.
I'm throwing out a bunch actually,.. all my old vans and stuff.
