I just changed to a kmc kool and surly 19t cog and now everytime I put pressure when pedaling it creaks and pops from the bb area it sounds, but it does not skip at all. I was running a pc58 and im thinking that the front sprocket is worn from that chain because I can see a little shift between the chain and front if a push on the pedals. Driveline looks pretty straight and bb seems tight (no wiggle if i grab cranks). It did this a little before the switch but now its a lot worse.

New chain + old cassette/cogs/rings = bad

If your front ring is old and worn, the new chain will definitely not sit right on it. You are lucky if you are just getting noise, later (and perhaps at the worst moment) you will get a nice big skip.

yeah - change the front ring. even if it seems fine it'll wear out your chain twice as fast.

Surly cogs + kool chains = problem. I tried it and no luck
