Hi Guys,
Going to be building up a new front wheel pretty soon. Trying to go as light as hell......
Plan is DT 190 Ceramic Front hub to TryAll front with DT AeroLite spokes.
Questions is, has anyone tried shimano centrelock rotors????? They look like they ought to be stiffer than six bolt..... Thinking of running an 180mm 07 XTR front brake.....
Maybe no-one has run them, but I thought I'd try.....
Thanks,
Adam

wow, no expence spared lol
Not sure if I would use the ceramic bearings, the only real gain is to xc weight freeks who also want the least roling resistance (in comprimise of decent seals)
I was tempted by the 07 front xtr hub and rotor, looks pretty light, but I am a little weary of the axle strength, though its made from ti, so should in theaory be stronger than an alloy one?
anyway, the xtr rotor looks ace, never been a fan of shimano disk systems though, not enough bite for my liking. Pop that rotor on an avid and I bet its great.

Was gonna run the 190 cause I can get a staff price on them through work and they are like 105grams, compared to the 154 of the 240s.....
XTR hubs look cool too, experimenting with one at the moment to see if I can convert it to a bolt on axle :D
We'll see......

My 2cents... the new XTR brakes have much more bite than my 4 piston XT's did IMO. I got to play with them last fall and was super impressed. Centerlock I think would be ok, they do have more contact area with the hub with the splines. Plus using the alloy carrier I would think would stiffen em up.

I have come across XC bikes that use those brakes, and a majority of the rotors were great. But, there were a few that kind of 'seperated' from the spline, giving it some major disc rock. It was like the rotor was floating foward and back. It happens where the pins connect the metal rotor with the carrier piece.
I don't know, give it a shot and test it out. I probably wouldn't, based on what I've seen some do, but then again the problem might have been corrected.

I am using centerlock rotor in the front.
Im using a non series centerlock rotor.
But, there were a few that kind of 'seperated' from the spline, giving it some major disc rock.
I had that experience: Since it uses a rivet to attach the steel rotor to the aluminum thingie that is splined to bite the hub. With constant front braking IE endos, pivots etc. the rivet made the holes in the aluminum larger having a bit of a play. My solution was to change them to allen bolts (with nuts). I got steel bolts so the rust will act as loctite :bigthumb:. So far so good (over a year on them bolt and nuts).
As for the centerlock hub im also using a non-series hub (m495), Ive gone through several rebuilds (bearings, cones, hub axle) but overall its no bother.
Im wanting the 2007 XTR brake rotor though so I dont think my rotor will last.

BTW this hub was from my XC bike which I gradually transformed into a trials bike. My rear DB rotor had 2 problems, it was also loose at the rivet and loose at the spline. Im using XT parallel push vees in the rear now.

Hey Adam
If I were you I'd test ride the new XTR disc lever before buying, I tried one at a Shimano night couple of months ago and it felt like a finger killer. The dual control ones were nice, but the disc-only I didnt like the lever blade action for 1-finger braking.

Why dont you use sapim spokes, personally I have found them to really light and really strong. Also you can get some cool aero ones, that we all need for trials.

I love the wheel that doubles as a salad shooter!

We have the Sapim CX-Rays at work, which are the ones you are talking about..... I am the wheelbuilder at work and I have found DT to be better spokes in general that Sapim..... The DT AeroLite is one of the lightest non-ti spokes in the DT range and is rated at the same strength as the Alpine 3..... They are cool....

Aerolites....arnt they like 6 bucks a spoke? Dont bladed spokes on mtb look:greddy2:

AeroLites are about $2.90 each for me....... :) And they are a thin blade spoke (fit through a regular hub flange hole) so they look killer and you dont get the shitty side to side flex that you do with proper roadie blades, I've built a few wheels with them and they came out killer......

if you're worried about rivets...

Also - just because I have this problem on another bike -
The brake track on any shimano rotor is narrower than avid pads. On a regular bike, this makes the pad grab the arms and creates a loud buzzing sound. It also makes the pads wear really unevenly. I'm guessing that on a trials bike, you'd never hear a sound, but the pad wear could still occur. I'd personally just get a 6-bolt version of those hubs and run the hope floating rotors (as long as you're going all out).
