Im currently running 18 12 (ffw) on my mod, i wouldn't mind experimenting with something a bit harder. what would be a good ratio?

Stick with 18-12 it is the best ratio if you are running short cranks on your mod which you are.

i feel like my gear ratio is a little easy. but maybe making the ratio harder might be too much?
so longer cranks make it easier right? perhaps i could experiement with a harder gear ratio and longer cranks to find a happy medium?

I would try longer cranks first.
I agree with everyone else. 18:12 seems about as hard as you might want it.
You'll be surprised how much diff longer cranks are.
unless you've ridden them before...:luke:

longer cranks will make it easier (more leverage)

when you guys say longer cranks what lengths are you talkin about?
You would need a really high BB, but I would go for around 290/300.

On my stock bike, i used to run 22 (chainring) x 21 (cog). I switched it to a 20 tooth cog, only one tooth difference, and it feels the same but has more power.
If you are experimenting with gear ratios, change it one tooth on the rear wheel so it's more subtle.

18-12 is pretty much the go for 20" bikes, some beginners bikes run an easier ratio (24-18)
You'll have a hard time finding an 11t rear pinion, and you probably wouldn't want to (the chain would have a hard time wrapping around it, and if you don't have enough chain tension the chain will literally jump the entire pinion under power)
So you need to get a 19t freewheel. Unfortunately all trials freewheels are only made in 18t, so you'll probably be stuck with some turd freewheel that won't last a week.
If you can find a decent quality 19t freewheel give it a try, if it feels too hard then perhaps try it with 170mm cranks (assuming you're on 158mms at the moment), maybe steal ffw cranks from a 26" rider for a day rather than spending alot of money on cranks just to try it out
