Hey guys, i'm interested in starting up trials,

What do you begin with? Can you start on a standard mountain bike?

or is it advisable to get a trials bike straight off?

Also, what is the most budget entry level bike i could get, and where to get it in Sydney?

Cheers

Loz

If you have never tried trials, don't get a bike straight away. For the first few months a resonable hardtail mountain bike will be more than enough. Learn some basic moves and go riding with as many people as you can to get an idea of whether you like it and what path you want to take (stock/mod etc).

As for price on an entry level bike it depends on if you want new or second hand, mod or stock. Most people in Sydney seem to build up trials bikes by getting parts which is not particularly cheap, maybe $1500-$2500 depending on parts for a stock. Second hand you should be able to get a good bike for around $1000 or cheaper for an older less well speced bike.

Yeah I was wondering what you were basing that observation on Tobe. Could be short for Lloyd, Lochlan, Lorenzo......:Wavey:

If your on the super cheap side... (like i was lol) and know you want to get into trials there are cheap mods (rhinos and montys) which sell for like 500 or even less but depending on the parts condition might need to upgrade some over time..

But like gaz said... do some research to what u want... really helps.

City Bike Depot in Sydney will have a complete Echo Pure on the floor for around the $950-1100 range around late December/early January..... I know I've been talking about this bike for ages but they've been hard to get, Deng keeps wanting to make them in 116mm rear....

I've got three on the way though :D

OK your on. Toz it is....:naughty:

As for the Echo Pure's that Adam is getting in, they should be a great way to get started if you are after a stock.

Hey guys, first thing.... unfortunately, i'm a guy, Lawrence is where Loz derived from.

2ndly, thanks for the replies guys. To what level can you get to with a "street dirt" style bike... trackstands, hopping, rear wheel hops, front wheel hops? at what point is it not safe to use a hardtail MTB? and have to go a full trials spec? I love the leech videos... but i doubt i'll get to 1/4 that level... if i could trackstand, rear wheel hop or ride up onto a chair or something
that'd be pretty near....

I might practise trackstanding first.. and if i cant nail that i dont think i'll bother.. but if i can.. then i'll start thinking about it, cos i love watching it! :)

i'd like if it i could ride the bike around normally too (to some degree)

I'll keep looking into it guys....

Cheers,

Loz

like how would i go starting off with something like this:
http://www.norco.com/2007bikes/Mountain/DirtStreet/

or this?
http://www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-AU/bikes/mountain/168/

or this?
http://www.mongoosebikes.com.au/bikes/detail.php?id=300

Dirt street bike?

so that i can still ride around (a bit) but still can start on the Trials basics?

as long as i'm not doing mega 3 metre high wall rear wheel drops.... these kinda bikes should be able to stand up to it right?

Cheers,

Loz

Hey mate,

Its really hard to find a real "do it all" type rig.

The STP is a pretty good ride if you want to stick to mainly street style riding, with some DJ and stuff thrown in. Trials on it will work ok as well, but only the very basic things like trackstanding, bunnyhops and stuff. Rear wheel stuff will take much longer on a non-trials specific bike.

I have proof that the Mongoose Transfer can be ridden really well. There is a guy in Melbourne that is riding really really well in competitions and on the street on one of those. I would say that might be your best bet.

I probably wouldnt try and do too much trials at all on the Norco.

Another idea is to look for something second hand, it will work out a shitload cheaper, and youll have parts that are more likely to help with your riding.

Also, going cheap second hand gives you a little bit of time to decide if you really want to concentrate on the trialsy type stuff, or more DJing etc. Better to try shit out first before you go head first and spend a couple of thou.

Hope this helps mate, welcome to the forum and the community! :wavey:

Seriously rush, thanks heaps for that, really helpful....

yeah 2nd hand would be a good option.... what are the best places to look?

agreed.. there is no way i'm droppping that kind of accounting bomb to realise i aint got the skills!

2nd Hand Mongoose would be a good bet then hey? hehe

$500 mark possible for that bike, or equivalent?

Cheers,

I started on an STP which I rode for aobut 3-4 months before "needing" to upgrade. I say "needing" as i was finding the bike was prevented me from progressing. I have since got an Echo control and my level has gone through the roof (to just above "pathetic") I would say if you ride 2-3 times a week and dirt/street bike will only be suitable for 3-6 months.

If you want a standard looking bike you might try and find an old pure (with seat) or similar.

If you are into more street and just want to throw in the odd trials move, then perhaps you might get more life out of a DJ but you can forget being very good at any rear wheel stuff....

Gaz... its not so much wanting it to LOOK normal.. i dont really care on looks...

but i woudl appreciate a gear where i could ride at a decent pace too on road or dirt???

is that too much to ask? cos on the trials gears.. your feet would be spinning through the roof right?

ahh how frustrating.. surely some of you trials guys are into regular MTBing too? or even normalish riding? Is the only solution 2 bikes? Cos i wouldnt mind any trials bike with a seat as long as it could get me moving at a half fair pace on flat ground?

so no rear wheel hops on the STP Gaz?

Man this is addictive, the more i research, the more i wanna get into it!!!

how long does it take on aveage to get onto rear wheel hops? (just stationary)

not really interested in DJ, its the slow precision trials stuff that got me hooked... just that i have some MTB mates who want me to join them on trails too........ hmmm

If youre into slow precision, get two bikes. Its amazing the difference specific bikes make to riding style and feel.

Most guys on here have at least 2 bikes. Dont even ask Joel (tomac) how many he has, or the calibre of parts on them all!

I have a XC bike, a trials bike and a roadie. I dont do DJ or FR or anything else really.

Cool thanks mate

*sigh*

so costly these hobbies, I already got an expensive one (remote controlled helicopters)

so its really hard to justify getting into this too!! :'( hahaha

oh well i'll keep looking, maybe i'll pick up a cheap deal and get a cheap trials and cheap MTB too LOL

or else, hey i could always do trials on a BigW bike! hahahahha
