Anyway im just wondering where would be a good motel to stay that is walkable to UC (5 of us). not sure if i will be driving or busing yet. much drinking to be done.

you'll be looking in the belconnen area. This is really the only thing within walking distance:

There is a YHA hostel in the city, it's about 5 minutes walk from the city bus interchange, and buses leave for the UC every 10 minutes or so most of the time. The ride time is about 10-15min.

i am looking at one on the Cnr of Belconnen Way & Springvale Drive (Belconnen Hotel Motel and serviced apartments) as Belco Premier was too expensive

5 of us, we basically need a room with 2 rooms in it. if that makes sense
is that far, or are there buses to UC?

that place isn't far away and it's on a bus line. I used to walk from school (near the belconnen hotel motel) to belconnen proper (near the UC) every afternoon. Expect a 40 minute walk to the UC. The bus route 17 will come past every half hour 7-7 and take you past the UC. The trip will be about 15 minutes.

The drive-thru bottleshop under that place is my local :) I currently live 2 mins ride from there. There is a take-away, two restaurants, three asian restaurants, a supermarket, two bakeries and a KFC in the Hawker shops there so you will be well provided for.
