View Full Version : The trials of comparing trials bikes

So many models, so many specs, so hard to keep straight. So I created an XLS with the most common makes/models that has columns for frame material, BB height, wheelbase, head angle, and some other stuff. If you think it might help you, send an email to me at jimm100@hotmail.com and I will send it to you.

Lots of caveats, of course. I did it for me, so it may not have everything you care about. It is not a polished piece of marketing material. I just started listing bikes and specs that seemed important. It grew by spur-of-the-moment additions, not a grand vision or well-thought-out strategy. The info came from web sites like trialsin.com, webcyclery.com, etc, so none of it is guaranteed accurate.

I color coded some of the cells/rows to highlight the ones that met my requirements (dual disc, BB of 10-30mm, wheelbase around 1080). You will probably want to clear all that out and highlight for your requirements.

I put a bunch of stuff in there that is helpful to me for determining what I want and what was important to me. Again, your mileage may vary.

If you send an email requesting the XLS, please make it obvious in the Subject. I get a lot of spam and am pretty ruthless with the delete button. If I don't recognize the sender or the subject, it's gone without being read.

So, if you're interested, drop me an email. I'm happy to share it -- perhaps it will help you in your search!

If you live in Colorado and have any interest in helping a new guy get started, please include that. I'd be happy to have people to ride with. I met literocola and will be riding with him. Would like to meet others.

Sounds like a good idea. Why not post it? Maybe it could be a sticky that's updated regularly. A Wiki?

Great idea. Do you mean you created something like this? http://free-du.t-com.hr/trials/frames.html

i don't thuink that's been updated for a while.

I like the wiki idea.

It's funny. It's probably a great idea to make such a spreadsheet.

But.. Why does trials attract such nerdy ass people?

Well, it's not nearly as comprehensive with regard to brands/models as that web site. I've never seen that one before. But mine is from the info available on 2006 models, so it is more up-to-date for the bikes covered. Please note that I was only considering stock bikes, so there aren't any mods in the XLS. But the format would probably be useful for anyone who was willing to do the clicking to dig out the info.

I'd be happy to post it, but don't know how. Cut and paste into a reply? I don't know how to start a wiki, either. More specific suggestions are welcome.

I tried cutting and pasting. It looks fine in the reply pane -- looks like a table with rows and columns and everything lines up. But I hit "Preview Post" and it becomes a mess.

Maybe Google Spreadsheets?

bidaci
11-03-2006, 06:56 PM
print screen and save it as a bitmap?

MultiRider
11-03-2006, 07:22 PM
I tried the print screen idea. The 197mb OTN limit requires me to resize and reduce quality until the content is unreadable. I googled spreadsheets and found sites that will turn it into a web page. I don't think that is the desired approach, is it?

I emailed the XLS to the address given on http://free-du.t-com.hr/trials/frames.html and told him he is free to update his site with the info it contains. Hopefully he is interested/willing.

My XLS has info his web page doesn't (such as BB height), so it will be interesting to see if he includes the new columns. If he does the update.

I'm still willing to email it to people. PM your email address to me.

Thanks MultiRider for your thread !

Here is a XLS (http://labourde.free.fr/PhotosVtt/frames.xls) of the webpage http://free-du.t-com.hr/trials/frames.html.
I made another XLS file (http://labourde.free.fr/PhotosVtt/geometrie.xls) with some frames and forks of last year (sorry in french an IS) .

A major problem is the width ? Meter or inch ?
As french, I'm habitué to deal with International System (meter, gramme, etc...)

Could you send me your XLS file ?
I would put it on my FTP account, and every body will be able to download it.
It's a first step.

I'm considering the setup of a wiki, but I'm not familiar with technologies, so be patient !

if you fucking faggots would spend 1/8th of the time riding a bike as you do analyzing stupid shit you'd probably have some killer STDs.

1. It's difficult for me to ride this week-end:

I broke my crank yesterday.

2. This week, I rode about 2-3 hours per day. And you ?

3. And if I want to spend 90% of my time "analyzing stupid shit" instead of riding, it is my life, not yours.

I'd be happy to send the XLS to you. Please let me know where to send (email address).

It would be helpful if the spreadsheets you posted had column headers. Also it would be best if they used metric consistently. I was very interested in BB height, so that figured prominently in my evaluation of frame geometries.

Ok, I did some changes (headers, I merge the files, add colors).
Here is the new file:

Here is my email address zebourd@yahoo.fr.

Sorry, I did not understand it was a joke ...

Nicely done. You might want to add columns for brake type (disc, mag). Rear wheel width is useful. I didn't have that on my XLS, but it is helpful because some bikes are now using the narrow SS width and cannot have gears. I ruled those out because I want gears to be able to ride to and from the place I plan to do most of my riding which is about 1.5 miles away. What is the column labeled "D*"?

My "Price Comparison" worksheet is actually a way to compare components. I thought it was very useful. Food for thought.

So, again, nicely done!

the@bourd

Thanks !

D* is the distance between bottom bracket and head tube.
See tartybikes.co.uk.

Here a preview of the wiki:
http://labourde.free.fr/MTB/Wiki/index.php?n=Main.HomePage

I have to format further the pages...
But it is already a first step.
Some rows left (like Magura/Disc,Weight,Alloy).
I think I will remove "comments" rows, else users will write "Echo are shitty built. Koxx is the best !!!!"

I am looking for a webdesigner too, cause the design is

PS: Any help will be appreciated.

That is pretty cool. Have you enabled it for editing by others yet? If so, I couldn't figure out how.

Will the editing feature enable users to add rows? For instance, the BT Raven 7.0 is out now and needs a row.

Is it possible to enable users to export it to a XLS? That way they could manipulate it on their own computers and highlight what is important to them, hide rows for bikes they've decided against, etc.

Is the "Source" column going to be a list of places you can buy it from (TrialsIn, Webcyclery, Midwest Cyclery, TartyBikes, etc)?

I'd like to see the post for that web link to be a sticky so that it is obvious / easy to find for people that are shopping for a new frame/bike.

>That is pretty cool. Have you enabled it for editing by others yet? If so, I couldn't figure out how.

Only the stock, mods and 24" pages are editable.
The others are locked
Click on the edit link at the left on the page.

>Will the editing feature enable users to add rows? For instance, the BT Raven 7.0 is out now and needs a row.

Yeah no problem !
You just have to learn the PMWiki Syntax. Good luck :p
But I try to develop a plugin to make it easier.

>Is it possible to enable users to export it to a XLS? That way they could manipulate it on their own computers and highlight what is important to them, hide rows for bikes they've decided against, etc.
Select a part of the tab (or the entire tab). Then copy it and paste it in your XLS or ODT file.
There is also a XLS button to convert your text to a tab.
For example, copy lines in your XLS file, paste them while editing the page.
The select them, and click on the XLS button of the menu bar.
Now, the lines are formatted.

>Is the "Source" column going to be a list of places you can buy it from (TrialsIn, Webcyclery, Midwest Cyclery, TartyBikes, etc)?
Now form where come the data.

>I'd like to see the post for that web link to be a sticky so that it is obvious / easy to find for people that are shopping for a new frame/bike.
I would like to test the wiki before make this thread sticky (security). So be patient !

I think the spreadsheet would be valuable to others as it is. Have you tried to get it made "sticky"? I thought of this again because of a new thread asking about which bikes have high BBs and so on.
