View Full Version : Maybe moving to Australia for my studies: need help

Hey there,

as I pretty fucked up my studies/life here in Germany, I decided to make a cut and start again. I considered moving to Australia for studies/working. Huge step, I know... I'm 25 now and it's time to move my ass, finally!

Are there any students here who I can talk to? I just like to get some impressions about campus life, costs etc..

I've already read a lot about "studying in Australia" and there is one thing that quite holds me back. The costs! I read somewhere that the average costs for a Bachelor degree are $5000-$13000 per year! I'd like to study something like bachelor sports/event management. And the Tuition Fee for that is $76000 AUD (4 years). Insurances, food, rent etc. not included of course.

How the fuck do you guys pay that? Do you have any scholarships? These fees are like 20x the fees we have in Germany.

I'd be really glad if there is someone I can talk to :gaybar:

They are the fees for an international student. For an australian student the degree will cost around $15,000, however the government loans you the money and you pay it back slowly when you get a job.

You should be able to live on $150 a week, but $250 is a much more comfortable amount. (this is for other expenses, rent, food, etc.)

We do have scholarships, some up to $30000 a year.

Sydney is a great place but is fuckin expensive, i would recomend one of the other major cities if your on a budget.

Chris

$250 per week sounds ok. Here in Germany I need about $450 (rent, food, clothes, internet, cell phone etc.).

So Sydney is one of the expensive cities... ok. Same with Munich here...

Sounds stupid, but what is like the "best" city to live in? I need nice warm weather all day/year long, modern life, relaxed people, some nature (for trials etc.) would be cool as well. What are the different cities in Australia like? What about Canberra? Melbourne? Any places you would suggest?

What are the different cities in Australia like? What about Canberra? when you say warm, do you mean warm relative to germany, or tropical warm? in canberra the coldest daytime temperatures we ever get are around 10 degrees C, if you want tropical type warm look at brisbane.

Chris

Tropical weather is ok, as long as it's not 365 days...

10°C min. sounds awesome. As long as it's nice and warm (about 10°C-25/30°C) most of the time, I'll be happy.

right now its 19deg in canberra. As joel said daytime temperatures range from 10-35deg, early morning in the middle of winter is often just below 0.

Melbourne tends to be 15-30 year round (right?) with warmer nights and then canberra.

canberra is too cold if you ask me. sydney is the best city in the world. if your after hot all year round, live in darwin, but thats really hot and humid. sydney's not that expensive, your only problem will be the tuition fees.

What degree can you get for $15000? Mine was $26000. And canberra can be pretty damn cold if you ask me. Newcastle climate = perfect, plenty of riding too, and a university, otherwise its fairly shit, but i love it.

Hi Chris,

that story sounds familiar ;-) I am from Darmstadt (Hessen) and I am currently in Townsville. I study here for one semester.

I got a scholarship from my uni in Germany, but there are quite a few German companies giving out scholarships.

Feel free to send me a PM when you have any questions. I got Skype if you want a chat. Also, you can reach me in January back in Germany.

Cheers from down under,
Basti

Wow how come u guys pay so much?
With my HECS i pay like 7500 a year? Its for 5-5.5 years.
If you live on campus at a uni its fairly cheap I think.
Alot of friends at uni that live on campus say its pretty cheap and they all make friendship groups and end up renting big houses and splitting the rent and it comes out to be pretty cheap.
In melbourne the weather is a bit cooler too, not as tropical as up north.

What's the demand for nurses down there?

For uni's, the "sandstone" unis ie the ones with the biggest international rep are in Sydney, but you'll spend $150 a week here on accomodation for a shithole. If you're just after a degree, the what Owen said, Newcastle is a good option, good quality uni, good weather and I dare say $150 would get you a pretty decent place to live for a week.

The other place that is on my list of places to live at the moment would be Perth, from what I hear a nice city. Also said to be the next Australian boom town for business and growth.

Fucking massive, well for ones that can speak English and know Arse from Tit. Come on down and join in the fun!

Nurses are ALWAYS in demand, and I have alot of friends of my parents in the area. I can always try for hook-ups. Psych and research.

 @ debts, I have enough for my house and shit. If you have enough nowse/nouse, you can get into the right industry, no qualifications. I will probably be earning over 100k in about 5 years.

Mind you, alot of that was bluster, although I can back it up. :dunno: anyway.

gotta love being a chef all i have is tafe fee's that probably only add up over a 4 year period maybe $1500 to $2000 hazza and i get paid to go to tafe as well

Chris

Ok thanks for all the info so far. It seems like $150-$250 is a good amount to live with, right? So that's for food, internet, telephone, activities? How much is a basic 1000-2000 kbit/s internet flat?

What are the rents like? E.g. in Sydney, Melbourne? The rents in Munich are crazy, I pay like $900 (warm water, electricity etc. not included) for a single room apartment, inner city. I don't like student apartments right at the campus. I prefer a standard apartment in the inner city, near the uni. It's ok for me to pay a bit more and have my own room and not share it with other students.

As for scholarships, I guess I won't get one. You need very good marks in order to get one... :hs:
And I don't really care about the reputation of the uni, so Sydney won't be my first choice. As long as I get a decent degree and the place is nice, it's fine. Currently I'm at the biggest uni here in Germany, with the best reputation. But I don't really care about this whole "elite uni" stuff...

This is all well and good guys but you should also consider the quality of riding at the university you choose.

Griffith University in Brisbane is attached to Toohey Forest which has some of the best natural trials spots you will find anywhere. I reckon that is worth thinking about :)

Dont expect to live like a king for 150-250, that is what you could get by on.

Look for a group house of uni students, rent should be around $100 including internet. What activities do you want to take part in? It all depends.

Wow 900 in munich? Is that per week?
You could rent a house big enough for a family for less than half that out in the suburbs in Melbourne. I think they can rent for like 320 a week and you dont even need a full size house! You could probably easily rent a city aparntment and get everything you need in the city in melbourne for less than 900 maybe?

Inner city sydney will be at least 150 to 200 a week just in rent, for a pretty basic place too. ( And with all the good pubs near by you will probably be spending another 150 to 200:run: ) but there is great riding in sydney. Plenty of spots and plenty of riders to. definately check out realestate.com.au. for sydney search suburbs like Surry Hills, Glebe, Randwick, Cogee, Bondi, Newtown, Pyrmont. These are traditional student and backpacker suburbs.

Randwick is the place to be.... seriously randwick is good, it's close to everything, the beach, buses into the city goes like every 10 min.
Googee is really nice but very expensive...

I pay $350/week for a pretty nice one bedroom apartment, in Randwick that is.

Yep, $900 per month. Munich is quite expensive...

Thanks for the link pav!

But I doubt I will ever be able to study in Australia. It's like $70.000 just for the bachelor degree. And a guy just told me, that the majority of students in Australia start their studies at around 17. So there are thousands of teenagers and I'm the only adult (25) :run:

there are also alot of mature age students at the uni's.
$70k seems expensive...perhaps thats the price for bond uni up here in queensland. bond is a private uni full of horny american chicks...and i worked security at the on campus tavern :D
