View Full Version : Spining advice?

I'm having trouble learning to spin, in general. I can sort of do a 180, either stationary or gapping but it's pretty sloppy. 180 sidehops are out of the question. I can barely spin a full 180 on my back wheel. Does anyone have any advice to help me out? I'm trying to look in the direction of the spin and all that, but no dice.

I came into this thread hoping it was some roadie person asking about spinning classes in a time trials forum and was so eagerly anticipating using my ban stick but was sorely disappointed.

Practice alot.

twist your shoulders and hips the opposite way that youre gonna spin, then whip them around as youre starting to jump, then do whatever move youre trying to do. the faster you can get your body spinning, the faster the bike will spin.

and running high psi really helps, then higher then better really

For spinning on rear wheel, it will be easier if you pump up a worn out tyre to a high pressure and find a smooth surface to practice on. When you are practicing try and keep your body balanced at the center point of your spin :bigthumb:

Sorry to disappoint you.

I just noticed that I spelled spinning wrong.

I tried to really throw myself around tonight but I felt like I couldn't get my weight back far enough.

Get your front wheel up high, the higher up it is the less distance it will have to go or something like that

How much of a pedal kick does anyone throw in when rotating 180 on a sidehop and such?

And do you hop at all when spinning on the rear wheel to loosen the grip or just keep it planted?

I thought the same thing.

Theory: look at a figure skater. If you start spread out (ie, front wheel low) as you pull to standing it will accelorate your spin.

What I do know: Look in the direction you want to spin. Lead with your body. Keep your head shoulders and hips turning in the direction you want to spin. Keep your body turning faster than the bike. When the bike catches up you stop spinning.

practice this:

trackstand, rear brake locked. crouch down in a central position on your bike. tilt your shoulders and twist your body in the direction of your front foot.

jump up like a bunnyhop except kinda uncoil your body as you jump, rotating away from your front foot. start with your head, you should be looking completely backwards before the bike has left the ground, follow with your shoulders and then the rest of you. you should be pretty far over the rear during the whole thing, and standing tall on the bike with the bars against your body during the middle part of your spin. aim to land the rear wheel in about the same place as it took off, it's way easier to learn that way as opposed to trying to land the front wheel where the rear was.

practice lots. and really concentrate on throwing your head and shoulders around, it's the key to rotation.

Go beside a curb and practice pedal kicking a 90 degree hop to your rear wheel to the curb. Get that, then go further. Try for a 180.

Practice 180 nose pivot/drops off ledges. Practice 180 front wheel pivots. Practise all kinds of turning moves. Get used to the movement. Then try something further and harder. Watch movies, try and mimic what they do.
Most importantly. Try the dumb shit you think is useless. Get used to it, and move on.

All it is is practice.

you can't learn to do 180's reading an internet forum. you just have to practice a shitload.

yep, good thing were said here

i also think it's easy to do a little endo first ( so body to the front and lift the rear wheel ) and then do the rotation
it also is easier when to combine a rotation on the front wheel first

but i think it's not so good c'ause you don't learn how to prepare your body

That's sort of my problem. I can rotate on the front wheel and then rotate 180 on the rear but when I try without the front wheel rotation, I usually end up spinning 90 and stopping with my wheel still high in the air. My biggest problem is trying a 180 sidehop. I just need to practice them more when I'm fresh at the beginning of a ride instead of wearing myself out doing bigger moves and then trying.

We can end this thread now...Thanks.
