hoi
I bought a flash for my cam and went out trying it out with a friend.
If any of you advanced photographiy guys (Kevin, Andy, firewrx612 and all the others from the off topic photo thread) can give me some advise or just some comments on what to improve/try/change, would be nice.

The pics are really awesome! They have a cool look to them with the flash.
Was it pitch dark when you took this shot?

pretty much, not 100% night dark but dusk was already over.
Thanks for the comment!

What a difference a flash makes eh?
Those are pretty fucking fantastic shots! If I had to offer a suggestion, like if I had to come up with something with a gun pointed at my head. I would say maybe try a warming gel on the flash to better match the light to that nice golden sunset. But I think the work as is also, personal preference I guess.
One thing I always find difficult with trials is trying to get the riders face lit. it seems to always be covered by an arm, handlebar etc.
Nice post some more.

those photos like sick with the shadows on the buildings. i like the backlit pic with the dark wheel in the air and the light coming through the disc..

Yeah, I really like the one of the shadow on the building as well. Cool to see that you have a fun new toy to play with! Looking forward to seeing some more stuff in the future.

Nice pics, especially for your first pics with a flash. Which one did you get?

What ISO were these shot at, there isn't much motion blur.

I bought a 430EX, i figured if i totally suck at it at least i would have spend a moderate amount of money.
Firewrx612
most of them were shot 1/200 @ ISO 100. Some with slower shutter speed.
I should have tried out upping the ISO but i had to keep up with the rider so i forgot to experiment with the ISO.

I usually shoot Trials at 1/500, I guess I could get away with slower. The ISO 100 is nice, really noise free shadows. Looks good.

Next time it is completely dark and you have some fun stuff in the background, set it iso 100, f/9 or so and a 3-4 second shutter speed. The flash will capture the rider, the background will come through with the shutter-make sure there is nothing bring behind the rider though.

This guy has a lot of really good flash tutorials on his site-
http://www.daveblackphotography.com/workshop/index.htm
of course he also has ~7 SB-800's and stands. He's a little bit of a Nikon fan-boy, but still the tutorials are good.

can you shoot 3 sec's steady with no tripod? i know people who can but :bowdown:to that!
or do you prefer the creative aspect of moving the camera while the shutter is open?

Portability. And he loves Nikon.

The second part.
But I do have the steadiest hands when a camera is in them.

thanks for the link, going to look into it.
@Andy, i´ll try that.

Imoh 500 is not needed 90% of the time in trials. I never shot trials higher than 1/350. It gives enough sharpness, at least when you shrink them down for online and screen use.
May be different if you do large prints, higher shutter speed may give you better results there. :dunno:

ok
these are only minor issues
1. when shooting in portrait orientation, try getting the cam off the body (a ttl chord is like 50$)
2. Get some kind of bounce device to even out light across the frame (so you don't get the body/bike brightly lit and and head dark from light fall off)

All pics were shot with a unleashed flash using a ttl cord.
But yeah i gonna get me a bouncer for it
