ive been waching alot of trials vids. and ive noticed that alot of the 26 inch tired bikes have 3 speed hubs.
i was wondering if i could get a 3 speed hub for a 20 inch. if so would it be to wide for my single speed frame? and were would i be able to get one?
thanks

I don't think they have what you're thinking of (internal geared hubs right?).
most folks use modified cassettes or road cassettes. you might also be spotting a single speed setup on a regular hub (using one cog, and spacers.).. or it could be a singlespeed hub like a Chris King..
as for mods and stocks, the spacing between the dropouts is different. Mod = 110mm, stock = 135mm. so technically, you could use any hub as long as it fits those sizes.

actually i was thinking of external gears. and i have a stock monty 216 alp.
so i could use a regular mountain bike hub and remove some gears?

I haven't heard monty stocks having irregular hub spacing.
but you can't put a regular mountain bike hub on a mod bike.
(mod being a 20" bike.)

I think my original post was confusing.. I shouldn't have said you can use any hub as long as it fits. I'm at work right now and its 4:30am..
but yea, glad to help you out..
the thing with mod bikes (20") is they're single speed, so you're limited with the options you have. but the options availible are still really good.

sturmey-archer 3 and 4 speeds are 115mm so you could take out an axle spacer and use one of those in your new monty 221ti if you wanted. However the pawls aren't particularly strong, and in the lowest gear the engagement rate is about 10 per revolution.

that would work but if you think about it, what do most mods run. 18-12. and pretty much the smallest cog you can even buy is a 12 or 11. and you wouldn't need a lower gear. you'd want a travelling gear but you still couldn't do it. you have to put a larger ring in front like a 22-16/12 to make it worth anything. not to mention the derailer you then need. I thought about doing a two speed on mine just to have a getting around gear so I'm not pedalling like a chipmunk but I realized I couldn't get a smaller ring in back unless I went larger in the front.
