I'm looking for a helmet which covers the back of my head better than a regular xc helmet. I was in between a xen and a dirt lid. I know the xen is 4 times more expensive, but i'm still leaning towards it, because of the ventilation it offers.

But does a xen protect my head better than a dirt lid since it's so much more expensive?

Not necesarilly, but it will probably fit better and stay cooler. maybe lighter too. I have a xen and I love it.

How about a Giro Hex, same coverage a little cheaper.

where do these price differences put themself into? Is the Xen better protecting than the hex?

I have a big head so maybe the Xen will offer more fitting adjustability. Giro high end helmets have been the only ones that fitted me nicely, even my troy lee fullface i used to ride freeride with a couple of years ago was less comfortable than my first 1998 giro hammerhead

Both pass the CPSC bicycle standards, so they will both protect your head equally well. The extra cost goes into the amount and complexity of the vents. The Dirt Lid has very few vents and a hard shell. The foam can be made quickly with a two piece mold and then the helmet is easily assembled. The Zen, on the other hand, is an in-molded shell with many smooth vents. To form all these vents, the mold has to include several removable "slides" which increase both the cost of the mold tooling and the time it takes for each helmet to be made. The in-molding (which makes the thin plastic shell a seamless part of the helmet) is placed into the mold first, and the the foam is expanded to fill the shape. This is more expensive than molding just the foam and gluing it into the hard shell of the Dirt Lid. But it also makes the Zen lighter, if that's worth anything to you.

I have one of each...

I love the vents on the XEN, and fits like a glove. My dirt lid is a Grio Flak both super comfy, but yeah the xen is 10x better for air flow.

Also one to check out is the new Fox helmet for All mountain similar the xen, saw pics from interbike of it and it looks very tempting...

link to helmet, Scroll down.

problem is my size, i have a 63cm headsize and only giro offers that size. That's why i wanted the xen.

I brought one here. Very happy with the xen. They have all sizes.
