Ive been learning trials on a street frame then I got a trials frame recently (0 bb rise) and since then (change of frame, about less than 2 months) I developed chronic backpains and pains in muscles used in pedal kicks running through my legs to the ankles. I also shifted to 22T-18T gears from a light 22T-20T. I also started to learn to pedal up on this frame.

My doctor gave me some excercises to follow and some painkillers. It is impossible to ride without the painkillers. Im on it 24/7. Being on medication helped to lessen the overall pain (if skip the painkillers) since Ive been using my muscles again.

Has anybody experienced this? I think there is something wrong with my geometry or something. I havent experimented on parts yet since I dont know where to start.

I appreciate any info guys. Thanks a lot.

Im using a frame similar to this:

But I have a lesser rise in the stem. WB is 1040 im 5'8", cranks 175, no saddle.

By the way ive read the other topic on backpains, but my pain came after ive switched frames and rode less in terms of time and less as hard as before, so my inquiry is more on geometry. Thanks again

this hasnt got anything to do with the geo side of things, but pain symptoms (back pain, and also pain in legs) you are describing sound like exactly what i have, and that is a slipped disc.
i have stopped riding all together for now while i try to get my back better.
im on anti-inflamatories and also pain killers, and i still stuggle to get in and out of my car etc, riding will only make it worse.
go and get a CT scan done on your back so you know if it is a slipped disc or not and then get appropriate treatment before you even consider riding again.

I was thinking he same thing but my doctor (orthopedic/spine) has ruled that out because of the location of the pain with and without movements.

But I would take what you said into consideration and get a second opinion though. When I heard what Ive wanted to hear I never had another doctor see me haha.

The pain has lessened after doing the exercises just as he has said. (strengthening the back muscles). Sometimes I dont take the medication just to measure the level of pain. Without medication I have a few hours in between pain.

I was thinking about the geo since i have a way longer effective toptube now than what I had in my street bike and a totally different position than before.

By the way how did you slip you disc? Is it from riding?

i could see it, if you are new to trials and haven't used some back muscles much in other sports, you could experience pain, until those muscles are strong enough to handle. Aka the exercises like your doctor said.

a slipped disc is caused by many things over time usually...and im assuming thats what has happened to me (still waiting to see an orthopedic specialist to get all the answers i want/need). riding wouldnt help the matter, but the 2 worst things i found for my back were sitting in my car and also running in general. both of them things drilled my back like fuck.

Walking daily and after the bike ride will help a lot. Also follow the excersices the doctor showed you and work on increaing your abdomen strength and lay off the bike.

i have lower back pain too, sounds like what you have. i have not ridden in forever but its just kind of staying the same for me because i cant rest it cause i play frisbee for CU and is not so bad that it forces me to take time off but trials is much worse for it. i find that my hamstrings get crazy tight and when im tight i can only reach the palm of my hands to my knees if my legs are strait. if i strech those out alot if helps. supposivly the chiropractor(if they are good?) can help if you put something a little our of wack? i think im going to try going before my health insurance is gone. what are the back exercises you do? ill do them too :)

Have you tried massage? I had what was diagnosed as the begining stages of arthritis in my shoulder and bursitis in my elbow being nothing more then muscle knots that were easily "cured" with masage therapy.

i think its more of a posture problem than geometry.

try different postures and positions on the bike till you're comfortable. And are you bending your knees when you're pedalkicking? I used to not bend my knees so much and my back was arched too backwards causing pain..

Try to loosen up, and bend your knees i guess.

Im 5'8'' and 140 lbs or approx 64 kg

I was kinda thinking both, my bad posture plus the new longish toptube, ive read that wrong bending of the hips (ie bending the back rather than all the hips) causes slipped disc too. Mat may be right. I may have slightly slipped my disc because ive been learning to pedal up lately.

I found something i googled, similar to what I feel, some info might be useful to others.

SCIATICA (pronounced si-ad’-i-ka)

http://www.backfrompain.com/back-pain/sciatica/about-sciatica/

What is sciatica? Sciatica is the official name given to a pain in the leg, foot, or buttock, brought on by a form of irritation to the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the entire body.
Sciatica is most commonly caused by a slipped disc in the lower back, some form of arthritis, or a pinched nerve. It begins with back pain, followed by calf or hamstring pain, and sometimes included numbness in the toes. Forms of sciatica, resulting from inflammation get better with time, healing themselves. However, bed rest is not the best way to treat sciatica. It is shown that remaining active and performing exercises that are not weight bearing can help. Given time, even herniated spinal discs can heal.

non weight bearing like trials? :naughty: wow ive diagnosed my pain (kidding)

If your pain is not relieved by the milder pain medications, your doctor may prescribe a naroctic (sic) analgesic
Wow does that include medicinal plants? :naughty:

I would suggest you see a chiropractor (spelling?). Anytime I have a back or neck pain a stop at the chiroprator usually fixes it. Not that they will be able to fix you're prob, but they can usually analyze specific areas and let you know what to change.
