i've got some avid ti's i'll sell ya cheap. anything that's not parallel push works fine. don't get xt, or xtr. they work but because of the back braking, the linkage comes apart. avid single digits. if you wanna be super cool then avid ultimates. or even shimano deore.

If I needed new brakes I would be checking ebay. That is where you are going to find some Avid Ti's for cheap.

you can use shneider permanent marker combined with any v-brake and get the feeling of having a brake stronger than magura or a good V...it lasts for about 15 minutes but stops perfect
some "skim" liquid which is used in the kitchen...I do not know the word in english could be used instead of tar...it is much better

the word in bulgarian is much like 'oil-remover'...it's lemon fresh and it has a pump to spray...it is really cheap-4 drops lasts for 20minutes the bottle is 500ml-2 dollars

Do discs work well as rear brakes?

They can do, Hope Trials/BB7s/Magura Marta are all pretty good.
BB7s can have issues with the brackets though, Hopes can be a bit spongey, and the Mags are fairly underused.
Good in the wet/mud though.
