Magura blood - Red or Blue?

Any difference?

I found a place that sells the Magura blood pretty cheap ($13 for 16 ounces) and just need to know which one you guys think is better.

Also, I've never bled my brakes myself... do I actually need a Magura brake bleeding kit or can I just get a hold of a syringe and a tube?

I am hoping that I can take care of this before the comp this weekend!

Thanks.

only difference is how they conduct heat, so just take the cheaper one or pay nothing and use water..

What should I do about the bleeding kit?

Not sure if I want to use baby oil or not... So either the red or blue would be fine then?

I'll have to wait to get the bleed kit caue it wont get to me before the comp anyway. I was debating if it was gonna be worth going down to the comp or not if I had no brakes.

That would be awesome if you could bleed them for me! Thanks man! Much appreciated.:bigthumb:

I use car brake fluid...specifically Prestone synthetic dot 4 brake fluid. Lolz...as far as I can tell any fluid works...however, i've to hear about real blood. ahah

I have to throw out that I've noticed a difference in the blue vs red. I started riding the blue stuff this year, and the compression felt better, however it seems to be more sensivtive to temperature.... Example: Warmer temps increase the pressure, causing me to release the TPA some. I also use stainless lines, so that might affect it as well...

Anyone else notice this? :dunno: I'm thinking of switching back to the red.

why? because the manual says "no"?

I was under the impression that any fluid that dosen't eat rubber works fine. Water seems to stop me better than any oil i've used.:dunno:

Correct. Brake fluid does eat away at some rubber seals.

yes, because of type of brakes and seals magura uses. dot fluid is highly corrosive to them. From experience, put blue blood in and don't touch it.

Forget about buying the blood, go to CVS or some pharmacy and get yourself some baby oil. It's cheap as hell and if your lines break, at least they smell nice..lol

Mineral oil feels terrible, at least the mineral oil i had did...it wasn't johnsons.

I've run everything under the moon.

At the end of the day they all have their pluses and minuses...I prefer the feeling of pure distilled water, but you can't run that for 1-3+ years without touching your bike. I prefer never touching my bike, so I run royal blue. Mid weight shock fluid (motorcycle) was great as well, but at about the 1.5+ year mark my seals will started to be compromised.

If I didn't mind buying bike parts ever, distilled water + anti freeze would be the choice...freezing brakes are no fun.

Thanks! I ordered some blue Magura blood, but it wont get to me until after the comp. I guess I could try water or something for now.

I know most of you have been using different oils for quite a while and this wont change anything, but I thought I'd post something I found anyway -

DO NOT USE MINERAL OIL FROM THE DRUGSTORE!!!! What you are buying at the drugstore is a laxative, not a specific industrial oil. This oil does not have the specific viscosities (up to 3X too thick) or additives for perfect functionality with a hydraulic system. A MSDS for drug store mineral oil is available HERE (http://www.cumberlandswan.com/moil.pdf). If you were in a jam and just had to use this crap, use DrakeolŪ 10 or 10B, Ultraol 100NF.

This is what Magura says about drugstore mineral oil:
What type of oil should I use in my Magura hydraulic brakes?
Magura Blood mineral oil is the recommended oil, which is a 10 weight mineral oil. By far, our most common problem we encounter is consumers putting off-the-shelf mineral oil (from a drug store) in their Magura hydraulic brakes. Off-the-shelf mineral oil is normally 30-50 weight which will make the brake very sluggish. In addition, off-the-shelf mineral oil has additives, perfumes and different boiling points, all of which can cause brake failure. USE ONLY MAGURA BLOOD IN YOUR BRAKE SYSTEM. Use of any other fluid besides Magura Blood mineral oil will void your warranty.

I just bought a Magura kit, so if anyone could show me how to bleed my brakes sometime before the comp, that would be awesome! (Thanks for those that offered already!)

My wife really doesnt want us to drive down to the comp with the chance of me not having any brakes, but I figured that if nothing else we can at least have a night without the kids!

Plus I'm gonna be taking lots of pictures at the comp!

We are leaving at around 11:00 AM tomorrow, I'll keep an eye out for anyone riding Sat. night. We are staying at the Ramada Inn Southeast. (Commerce Rd)
