how would a 2001 magura louise compare to an avid juicy 5 or hope mini.
would it have enough bite for trials use

No.Stay away from the older Louises.

Do not buy it. Not enough bite, but more important: They all leak.

The older model Louise's did tend to leak extremely easy and just generally didn't cut it as a disc brake for trials use. I think the Louise's from 2004 onwards are all pretty good offering good 'bite' and overall stopping power, but also good modulation.
In comparison to a Hope Mini or an Avid Juicy 5, you are better off sticking with one of the two for the reasons mentioned above.
