View Full Version : Magura issue
When I turn the TPS to counter the pad wear, only one side moves. How can I get them moving equally? One side is in a few mm's and the other side is still in the starting position. Also, the pad that isn't moving is wearing at a much faster rate. What's going on?
I'm a magura noob, I was happily running V's until I switched to mod. Any help is appreciated.

Few things:
1. How new/old is the brake?
2. What are you using for fluid?
3. Are you starting with the TPA adjuster all the way out? And if so, is there any play or air in the system?
4. With it all in the start position, how close are the pads to the rim?

Magura pads never move at the same time anyway. Just make sure the pads are square with the rim, and as close as you can get them to being the same distance from the rim on either side. Set up the pad distance with the TPA all the way out.

If you use too much TPA, this will happen. Turn the TPA ALL the way out, and readjust your brake.

Does the one pad move at all? Is it always stuck?
The brakes are just a few weeks old. I believe it has the stock magura fluid and yes, when I setup the brakes the TPA was all the way out. Both pads move when I brake, but when I turn the TPA only one moves. They work fine, so this isn't a huge deal, but it would be nice to be able to use the TPA for minor adjustments.

this will happen because the friction in the two slave cylinders isn't equal. Unlike with cable operated cantilevers you can't fine tune the retractive spring strength so you can't even them out. Sometimes it will be one cylinder and sometimes the other. The only way to get it to work properly is to use no TPA. I would suggest using no TPA anyway, as the TPA bits seem to break when they're used by trials riders - if it's dialed in.
If you're really having a crisis about it, a little bit of tri-flow on the sticky slave cylinder will smooth it out. Then the other one will stick !

this is normal. the tpa is preloading the first slave (the one with 2 hoses) with oil, pushing the pad closer to the rim. i usually set this one a tiny bit further from the rim anyway so i can use tpa if i have to

I've begun to piece together that tpa is a bad idea. all it does it force the piston down further pushing the fluid down. it's impossible to control where that fluid goes. so usually, using the tpa will just cause drag. never touch tpa, when pads wear, grab a 4mm allen and do it right. you'll thank yourself. Trust me, I've done it wrong a lot.

Sometimes you gotta use the TPA. I have to on my front HS33s. They are in as far as they can go, but I still need to move em in a bit to get good lever feel. =/ Someday I'll upgrade to a front disc.

quick bleed to fill up the lever. probably got some air. I've found too that the lever feels worse with any tpa. i don't know why.

Nope, I just did a bleed a week ago. It's always been that way. I guess it's the combination of my fork/rim/maggies/pads that leaves a big gap.

they can be wierd. especially with the little plastic ring it won't ever move just a little bit. whatever works though.

Use Citroen LHM oil. Its the same oil that monty sells but way much cheaper. used it for about 6 years.

I just had something weird happen to mine last night. I let my son ride my bike for like two mins and then when he handed the bike back to me there was no brake left at all. I could pull the lever back so that it touched the handle bars.
I didnt see anything leaking and I didnt mess with the TPA since it's been stuck for quite some time now. I am hoping that it just needed to be bled and refilled. Not sure at this point.
