Avid sd-7 arms are nice and a little cheaper than the ultimates. I ran deore for a while, they aren't as solid, in fact they had great modulation for trail riding, but sucked for trials.

If not the Ultimates, the SD-7 arms are pretty alright, and if you can get an XTR lever.

The more expensive the better.
xtr lever, avid sd-7 caliper, xtr cable/full xtr housing, plaz/heatsink v pads, and a harsh grind, this will be all you ever will need.

I have avid TI levers and arms and I loved the setup. Then I got a new frame with maggie mounts. I love both maggies and Vee's but I love the simplicity of vee's.

yea I want this setup, BUT I cant buy levers!, I cant buy Nokon housing!, avid calipers maybe, heatsink too
:(
dont waste your money on nokon housing, ive felt a few different set ups using it and it isnt worth it, xtr is just as good.
Flak jacket feels really good to me. :dunno:
Ive never had great front brakes though.
flak jacket might be ok if its 100+ degrees out, anything less and they fucking suck.

so much of this is personal preference, and there are a lot of gimics out there. avid ultimates are definitely the wholey grail of V brakes, but they are probably not worth it unless you want to pimp your ride and get every little bit of power and feel. So many people run SD7,SD5, I run old 2.5SLs (from the late 90s). They work fine

I second that.
But other levers, e.g. an LX (or deore) will do the job.
Calipers don't matter a lot.
Housing, and pads can increase the brake power very much.

I've same opinion, I've LX levers, but almost nothing housing:ugh:, and heatsink pads

Well if Felix agrees, it must be the bomb ;-)
Avid Single Digit 7, with XTR cables, and a good Avid or Shimano lever would work great, along with Heatsink mounts, etc.

I was wondering... would Paul's Motolites work well. They cost the same as the Ultimates, but could they be better?
Any thoughts?

I don't think their is any need for callipers such as ultimates when a calliper such as the sd7 will give you the same amount of power (if set up right) and is a much more realistic price. Whatever you do, do NOT get Shimano XT or XTR callipers as the parralel push system on them makes your brake really 'spongy' and loses alot of power as a result, anything else shimano such as the Deore you cant go far wrong with.
As the rest of the brake, as people have suggested XTR lever, Heatsink pads and XTR cables will work wonders.

All I'm missing is a carbon fibre XTR Shimano brake booster!

Never tried one, but I've heard they're flexy as shit.

That is definitely not good. Any one else that has heard this or experienced this?
If it really is true, I guess I will just have to go with Ultimates.

get the top line for everything (or at least next best), after market pads, grind your rim and throw on a booster.
