hey iv been looking at some new complete stock bikes like on webcyclery and the like. i noticed that, of the ones they actually show built up, they're all single speed. what's the deal? i thought stock bikes had to have 5 working gears.

Not any more.(correct me someone if I am wrong) UCI rules were recently changed to include singlespeed stocks. So no more five gears necessary to enter comps in the stock category. While we're on the subject, are Deng's new singlespeed-only 26 inch frames still considered stock as far as competition goes or is there a new class for them???:dunno:

Good question. I have heard from a number of people that if you want to compete with a single speed 26" bike that you have to compete as a mod, which just sounds dumb if you ask me. Both have strengths and weeknesses, but a 26" rolls over stuff better. Just doesn't sound fair.

Fact is, when I built my bike I figure that I just don't care because trials competitions are so rare that if they ever held one around here they would let anyone who wanted to play compete on whatever they brought.

Maybe I am wrong, but it works well for what I do on it. I have a casset, but I don't know if I could get five gears on a BT cassette. It is pretty narrow. I went with it so I could get a nice straight chain line.

ah, that would explain it. the only set of rules i was able to find online stated that stock bikes must have a derailler, 5 gears, etc. but that was a rule set from 2001, so i figured this is a good enough place to ask. im curious because im looking into buying a trials bike in the coming year and id like it to meet uci requirements.

while im at it, im fairly new to this sport (hence the post in this section), how does one go about fitting 5 gears onto the rear hub? i cant find a 5 speed cassette anywhere. do you just take a regular 8 or 9 spd and remove some cogs? iv also heard its better to use a road cassette instead of a mtb, im assuming this is so one can use a short cage derailler. wouldn't this compromise strength though?

yea, you take some bigger cogs off a cassette. But honestly, building a SS is easier and less hassel then the "comp legal" bikes. If you do go to a comp, theyre going to let you ride SS, I'm sure.
