So I was just told recently by an old carpenter that I should try belt dressing on my rims. It used to be made in a stick to rub on, and now it's a spray on used in the automotive industry to prevent slipping on belts. So has anyone tried it?

I think a few people on here have tried it, but I cant really remember results :hs:

it comes in a spray can. It's used on automotive belts to stop them slipping. In Australia it's sold as "belt grip". It works very well, the secret is in the amount to apply. If you spray directly onto the rim you will overapply it by about 10x. It will take ages to dry and gum up your pads. The way to do it is to lightly spray some onto a rag, spin the wheel fast and lightly apply the rag to the rim.

The good thing about this stuff is that unlike tar, it increases friction without actually being sticky (if you apply right) so your pads don't stick to the rim.

Remember, apply to a cleaned rim and as lightly as possible.

Also, Good Morning Rushford!

Yeah, this stuff works great. As Joel said, spray a bit onto the rag and then apply it. Took me about 2 applications to figure out that there was too much being put on from directly spraying it at the rim. Also, it doesn't make much noise and has a bit more modulation over tar.

The product is intended to be applied to the belt itself, wich is a rubber compound, could it be better to apply it to the pads and that's why it is easy to overapply it on the rim?

Okay so here's my test result: My back brake setup is avid sd7 with plazmatic crv pads, i applied the belt dressing to the pads and holey smokes I'm not using tar anymore. The pads soaked it up like a sponge. I wiped off the excess with a rag. It also works in the rain. On my front tire, I put it on the rims and it worked, but wore off very quickly today. This stuff is supposed to increase wear life of drive belts, maybe it will do the same for my brake pads.

Interesting. Maybe I'll try this tuesday on my stocko pads.

I used it for a while when I had maguras. I used it on a worn grind typically, when I couldn't be fucked regrinding. I use hotshit Vs now so don't need it - but I wouldn't hesitate to put some on if I needed to.

I also found it worked in the wet.

i just picked some up at wal mart today. gonna give it a go. I'll try it on the pads and see how it works. I hope it works well, my maggies just haven't had enough lock and stay locked kinda power for some time now.

Hmm, I've never tried putting it just on the pads. Let me know how it goes :)

How long does it last? any advantage on ground rims?

well I tried putting this shit on my pads last night. And then I decided to bleed them because they've been kinda sloppy lately. turns out they're sloppy because the slave cylinder is leaking. fucking piece of shit maguras. so I spent all fucking night finding the leak and then bleeding until it's a full as possible. I'm probably gonna head out and right tonight. I'll let you know how the belt dressing works. if the maggies will hold up.

Will the belt dressing work with heatsink red pads or does it only work with a softer rubbery compound?

i have blue heatsinks. I guess we'll find out. I don't think it did anything. It doesn't seem like the pads soaked any up. I'll let you know after a ride though.

I just tried some and it worked pretty damn well. I sprayed a tiny, tiny bit on a rag and spun the rear wheel while applying it directly to the rim. It locked really well, but allowed for a bit more modulation than I wanted. There was a big pedalup/hook(ish) thing that I was trying that had a huge puddle in front of it. It seemed to be pretty much unaffected by the water, but I never got it soaked.
All in all, it is one of the better things I have tried. I think I will stick with this for a while.

P.s. This is with Koolstop pads. ;)

it will feel gooey for the first day (epock) and then it will have less of that modulation you speak of.

granted its much better than tar, but i still fucking hate it cos it makes your brakes incredibly ear bleeding loud... just setup your brakes right :squint:
