View Full Version : Why not clipless?

Ok... I dont want to be grilled for this one but I am an XC rider and cant see why no one uses clipless. It just seems like one could have more controll and possible more leverage on the bike with some clippless. Is is just an image thing? is it outlawed in competition? is it just not cool? Also, I want a stock echo if anyone is selling. Thanks,
~Max~

Well for one thing it would suck to be attached to the bike when you mess a trick up and have to jump off or put your foot down. In other words, you'd probably fall a lot.

Edit: Oh and no, it is not allowed in competition.

You would also clip out alot accidentally when doing side hops and stuff. Go ahead and give it a try, just be careful.

gotchya. I have tried with clipless on my xc bike. Man I need a trials bike. anyone here do any mountain/trials unicycling? I am getting into that, its fun but fucking hard, would love some advice. So far I can ride a unicycle and bounce around a little but not well. word. later.

well the reason you go clipless on XC isnt to just stay on the pedals but to use 360* worth of power in your legs as upposed to just 180*. in trials you are only use 1/4 of the stroke( give or take a little depending on the move) and dont need all that power. its really not hard to stay on the pedals once you understand you arnt pullin the back of the bike up but more or less guiding it with your feel while all the energy up is from your arms

you know that uncomfortable feeling you get while charging a hill on your xc bike because you're not sitting down. not do that while side hopping and kicking. the only person who could even come close to riding clipless is marco hosel. clipless don't support weight very well either. you'd bust cheaper clipless from take drops.

you should know that the only real time that clipless don't release real good is if you are going straight over the front or back, you'd better wear a full face helmet.

this is from Trials-Online's excellent FAQ

No you don't, because you don't know how to hop if you're hopping with clipless pedals. (statistically speaking)
You see, clipless pedals are out of question for trials riding, so save yourself a lot of research and go get yourself flat pedals. Ask anyone who's anything in trials and they'll laugh at clipless (not to mention toeclip pedals). There are two main points which make clipless forbidden in trials..
Clipless are dangerous. Try trackstanding and then clipping out when you lose it. It'll be fun, guaranteed. Now imagine yourself bailing from a 5 ft drop off with clipless. Actually, almost anything you try will be potential death if you ride without a helmet and with clipless pedals. Not so long ago, there was a dual slalom rider who died because of clipless, and he had all the protection equipment. Just don't do it.
Clipless are uncool. Anything you think you might know in trials is wrong, and it's that way because you rely on your legs pulling bike up by pedals when necessary. You will never learn proper techniques (possibly because you might get yourself killed before) riding with clipless and hopping by pulling handlebars up with your arms and pulling pedals up with your legs. You'll be doing so called level hops and you will suck as a trials rider and will be uncool, not to mention living in constant confusion as to why your hops aren't getting bigger. Correct answer: because the technique you use is fundamentally wrong and the little bulb just won't light up because of some psychollogical barriers present when riding with clipless. You'll never come to idea of non-level hopping.
Even if you were a seasoned pro switching to clipless, you'd gain nothing---there would be nothing you could do with clipless that you couldn't have done with flat pedals.
LawnMM from Trials-Online forum once said: "You don't go to trials riders heaven if you die in clipless-related crash".
There are sexy looking flat pedals who make riding much more enjoyable, safer and they also grip your feet like nothing you've ever expected. Ask any recent clipless>flat runaway. Get ones that are wide and big and have replaceable pins. I've heard people say that DMR-V12 magnesium are the best pedals in the world. ;-) (I ride regular DMR V-12)

another reason might be that under UCI regulations you can't run clipless.

I'm considering giving it a go, I'm fairly proficient with SPDs. Ben Bolton (aus) used to ride with "big red" 636s.

I don't think he does anymore, but Jeremy Vanshoonhoven (spelling?) used to ride clipless. It's been done. (emphasis on past tense)
