the mechanism has infinity yo, but it feels like about a 36 because it takes a while to engage.

It's called a roller clutch, there's one shim with teeth on it that sits a on taper,on the inside there are four pawls, as you pedal forward the shim slides along the taper and the the teeth connect with the pawls.
Where as the silent clutch just uses shims no pawls
or engagment teeth,
A simple rachet design. American Classic use the same hub technology and i destroyed one in less than a month.
I've still got the hub, i'll show some pics later.
It feels like more than 36, but in cold weather (under 5 C) it can feel like 10.
Seriously, once i rode in -5 C and i bailed a lot because of it.
BUT, there is a good way to make your SC the best:

It's not my video. I don't know how it can be done, they don't really want to tell me. It's a secret yet.
The ring is used because if you don't put it on, a SC dies in a few months. With a ring it lasts years depending on the quality and measures of the ring. In Hungary a lot of ppl use SCs this way.
If you don't want to make a ring, this will do the job too (34,9mm or what):

with a simple bolt of course...

If you buy a stealth hub it has instant engaugement with a tiny bit of flex. Its kinda heavy but the weight is worth it IMO.

because the mechanism pushes outwards on the freewheel body, if you dont have somthing holding it, it will crack eventually with trials use.

I wouldn't use a silent clutch for trials, believe me I've blown two of them and it always happens when you need them most :Owned:

by riding trials with them!! they suck DICK. Reason why shimano stopped producing them...
The first one was the most spectacular! picture this:
your on a narrow concrete block 1 metre off the ground balancing on the back wheel about to gap to another block the same size/height just over a bike length away, you lower the front give it some preload and just as you punch "BANG" !!!!!!!! :Owned: Can't walk for 3 days.
That just painted a horrible picture in my mind.
With a proper ring a SC is more reliable than an ACS or WI for example.
If you used it without any ring, that's your fault...

Which means the ring fit tightly on the freewheel shell? :D

N also i hav encounter some problem wit this silent clutch, which is the quick release sometimes get loosen n b4 tat i already make very tight! Anybody here encounter this??
the skewer has nothing to do with the hub..
as far as the shilent clutch.. I dont think its that bad.. it seems it holds up about as well as other cheap hubs..
so the clamp is to keep the hub shell from going boom? so if you run it with a casset wont it work kind of similar?

One of my friends has been using a SC for more than three years without any problems. The diameter of that ring was less than the shell by 0,4mm!

Some good info on clutches. The whole 'mechancial diode' idea is hilarious! (to me)...
Well it's good for internet info sharks anyway;)

Stephen Maeder told me they have instant engagement and he likes it better than the king.Stay away from Shimano LX silent clutch hubs, when they go, they go with a BANG!
I've never had any problems with my kings, besides one time..not to bad

Stealth hubs are sweet. The ONLY downside for me is they are quite a bit heavier than kings. But if you want more spring and something that will NEVER skip (unless you weigh over 250 lbs) then get a stealth. Kings are good, but I like Stealth better. Never tried shimano...never will try shimano.

he wasn't talkin bout the LX garth, it was about the stealth.... which do have instant engagement....
Im assuming you made that same mistake i almost did haha.

Are you talking about this?

So does it work like a SC or like a normal hub?

yes that's the one. The first Gen tended to explode - despite this a lot were sold because of the promotion of the then Brisa team of Nelson Reis and Chris Santos - ain't that the way. The second gen seemed to fix those problems but didn't sell too well to trialsers because it's too heavy. It's got some popularity with MTBers. The question is why (?) do you need a completely different system.

Well I just blew up my silent clutch, and boy was it loud. Now I am unsure which path to take in terms of getting a new hub.
