It is amazing what 1 pedal can do to 1 shin in a time frame of .25 seconds. Now, maybe if you attached a pedal to a stick and had someone beat you with it for a minute or so, that would be another thing.
Shin pads from now on........

That how my brother got interested in the sport. He bought shin pads with his bike.

Yeah I got my shins on Monday night. A pretty good jobbie, but my friend's shins are absolutely covered, so mine look great compared to his.

All mine are pink even from two plus years ago.

I've got semi-brown ones on my calves and on my shins. I've got some pink ones on my shins too :dunno: I think the deeper they are, the pinker they get. Or maybe it's just cause I'm asian...

I'm asian too, all of my scars are brown, and they're all on my left shin. Its a great excuse to go for a tattoo on my right shin.

Shin guards. You can either throw down 20-40 bucks and buy an actual pair of shinguards (661...etc.) or you can figure out a way to be ghetto (soccer guards). I for example bought a pair of lightly used karate/ninja arms guards, cut them off to fit, dyed them black, and I had myself some sweet guards. They work great. Plus, if I need to karate kick somebody dead while riding, I'm good to go.

I ride the fox launch shin/knee combo. I reckon its bulky and got them for DJ'in and urban assult.
yea man those damn pedals that's like the only injuries I ever get from trials. it's great for freaking out your friends by showing them some fresh wounds unexpectedly, especially squimish girls

You get ready to do/do a big move, and your foot slips off the pedal. The other foot is still on, and brings the front pedal right into your front shin. Then your shin proceeds to slide downwards until your foot hits the ground. Long, deep cut.:yum:
But yeah, it usually happens when you're trying something big that you haven't done before. So before you try that something, get some shin guards! Oh yeah, and don't try crankflips without them ;)

sometimes it happens when you're doing the usual stuff you usually do as well, like a bunnyhop. Or just hopping on the rear for practise.

i think i have only hit my shins twice. 1st time no shin guards :(. 2nd had shin guards, so happy i had them on cause it would have been a bad one. i dont think i have hit my shin(or i havnt noticed with shin guards) in over a year? gummy sole 38$ skater shoes is where its at, no slips. if you dont want to slip step in gum. i had some crazy grip after that :ugh2:

If i ride without shin guards, I'll hit my shin. If i ride with shin guards, i never do. So i guess they are doing their job, haha.

I noticed that 19 times out of 20, I hit my right shin because that's my forward foot. When it slips, the left foot rachets the pedals right into my shins. While I recommend wearing shin guards on both shins, you can get away with wearing htem on your forward foot shin. I did, especially on hot days.

haha, i bet that really cooled you off. And watch those tan lines.
hes right, i usually only hit the shin of my forward foot. Sometimes the back of my bad foot too, rarely.

Place your feet so that the pedals are not at the ball of your feet but are at the middle. No problems then.

..sarcasm on the last statement?
After I switched to skater's shoes I haven't experienced any slipping off the pedals...

I get a TON more power when I have the ball of my foot over the spindle of the pedal. It allows you to use your ankles a lot more.
I was running an old MG-1 with a total of 4 pins on the right pedal for about 9 months and not one slip. Finally go out and get a new pair, and low and behold: foot slips off the pedal within 20 minutes of getting on the bike. I-R-O-N-Y

Keep an eye on eBay for shin guards. I got my Lizard Skin shin guards for $5 Semi-used but new condition) and my sons for $10! (Brand new)
I smashed my shins ONCE... I will never ride without them again!

This is the picture I took of my shin from the Seven Springs national in 1999, maybe it was 2000. Slipped a pedal coming off of a drop, and got a ride off to a shady hospital. It ended up being about 45 stitches. about 7 years later theres still a gnarly scar. Club Roost pedals are badass, but can do a number to shins.

:eek3: Fuk! A pedal did that? Time for me to get some shin gaurds. I regularly smash the shin of my forward foot but i haven't seen anything like that!

Yeah, it was pretty crazy. The good news is that they got me fixed up in time to make it back in time to hobble back up the base of the mountain on crutches to watch the pro slalom finals.

PS no, there was no visible bone, but I could sit there while I was waiting for the ambulance and move my foot and watch the tendons/muscle/whatever moving...
:eek3:
Shit man thats nuts.
I am now officially scared.

better to get a shin guard to be safe.. or else PAIN!!!:noes:
I am actually glad that is a shitty photo because I don't want to see any more. that is seriously nasty.
I am a beginner and after 2 minor "shin meets pedal" incidents I will never ride without shinguards. I actually feel much more confident with them and therefore ride better too.

im the same, i always wear shin guards when on my bike now. i have found i have alot more confidence in certain moves as well...take sidehops for example, i will try and push myself for higher sidehops than i know i can do in the off chance i will make it...if i dont make it then i will land on my leg up on the wall, and the shin guard stops and pain or injury. whenever i do this everyone is like "owwww" but i dont think they realise that it doesnt hurt, and infact its a soft landing that helps to protect my fucked up back quite a bit.
