because the wheel isn't clamped into the dropouts tight enough - that's why it's slipping. Tighten up the QR more or get a nutted axle.

i tink this r some of the problem:
-wheel not secure tightly to the frame
-hub end nut r smooth which make the grippin of the frame n nut not stay to its place
-hub loosen OR the freewheel nut tighten to the hub is loose
-spokes r loose
Hope this helps...

QR simply not strong enough? Why don't mod riders run QRs? Track riders? Nuts are required for high torque applications.

I just had this problem with my rear.
My drive side rear cone was destroyed, and bearings well, ruined aswell.
Axle bent just slightly, and nut that holds the cone threads were torn up.
I replaced all the innards of the hub: New cones, new nuts, new axle, and new bearings.
Problem solved.
Total cost would have been about 3 bucks. But, my shop didnt want my 3 dollers.... free stuff, and free shop use.
I was freaking out becuase I thought the hub was ruined, and dont really have the cash to shell out $XXX for a new or even used part. Then having to spend cash on spokes and then the time to relace the hub into the rim.
No fun.

best to do as you have, and replace bearings sooner rather than later. If they get really funky they will ruin the bearing race of your hub, THEN it's ruined. Bearings are so cheap compared to a new hub and build.
Cool about your shop - is that the ride-on mower in the fixed gear gallery in your sig? I want one.

Inded Tomac, they hook me up quite a bit. They introduced me to Hannah Steffans and Mick Steffans. Always in there true'in my rims, and replacing somthing. But then again, they know when I am buying my next roadie and DH, I'm buying from them.
Actually I found that pic on google some place. I reckon its the funniest thing I've seen since Cycle-Ball.
And with that Hub, I was lucky taht I didnt ruin the hub, because I rode it a lot and just kept tightining the cones.
BTW- Hannah rides the same hardtail as I do check out her site http://hannahsteffens.com/
I cant wait to get a session in with this girl.
