I took my bike over to this park this past weekend. It's called Ringing Rocks Park which consists of a few acres of nothing but huge rocks. They call it "Ringing Rock Park" because if you hit the rocks with a hammer, it makes a ringing sound like a bell.

I actually got called an idiot by a woman that works there because I was trying to hop around on the rocks. (heh heh)

I really thought that this place would be awesome to ride, but because my experience is limited, I had a difficult time. (Thats why there are no pics of me riding there)

I am sure expert/pro/elite riders would have a ball here.

Below - Here are some pics of my son climbing around on some of the rocks.

Not to sound like a know it all, but we have been going there for years, the North jersey gang that is. We were just talking about it the other day. That place is rediculous. endless lines. Go down the trail further too. More rocks and sections in the woods. we had tons of practice sections in there some years ago. i would assume everything is the same. i don't think those rocks are going to move anytime soon.

Rock on

That's cool. Do you normally go to the one in Pottstown PA, or the one closer to Allentown PA area? (North of this location) The one north of this paticular place is actually bigger. I forget the name of the town that it is in.

Sorry no pics of riding. I only rode for a little while. Like I said, I found it pretty difficult to ride there. Every time I put my foot down I came really close to falling down between the rocks and breaking my leg. Still kinda new at this guys.

ah yes, the most challenging riding spots are the ones where you risk breaking an ankle every time you dab. Good fun.

I think I went there for a geology field trip my freshman year of high school (or maybe the one near Allentown). All I could think at that point was "I wish I had a bike...and I wish I could ride trials...". Cool place.

There is a section of Sourland Mountain Preserve in Somerset County, NJ that has HUGE boulders that look like they could be fun / difficult / suicidal. The problem is it's a pretty decent XC ride to get up to the top there. I dont think I would want to try it without a seat.

On a seperate note...Lance, what are your recommended riding spots in NJ for a sport level rider? You can PM me if you don't want to pollute this thread.

Threadjack: Are there any geological tools for finding rocky areas or large boulders? Normal topo maps don't help. I want to find more places around the southeast.

That's an awesome idea.

In the past I have looked up parks in the area and googled them looking for pics with rocks or descriptions of rocks. I had some good finds with that technique.

LOL - Yeah, thats a drink bottle.

I actually saw another place similar to this place this past weekend at the top of Blue Mountain. Near Blue Mountain Ski Resort. I'll have to check it out more the next time I head up that way.

Princeton has plenty of decent urban to keep you busy for a week....you will get kicked off almost everywhere really fast though, i've been in many a scuffle over riding on things there and I've only ridden Princeton 2 or 3 times.

yo mike....usda natural resource conservation service publishes county-based soil surveys with soil types delineated over aerial photographs. often times rockiness or stoniness (did I just say stoniness?) is indicated. they are available for free, and most libraries have copies. if you're GIS savvy you can d/l digi files. so maybe not the fastest way to look but if you're already checking topos....
