View Full Version : Not anything amazing, but some pics of me riding today.

No pics here that will really impress anyone, but I just thought I'd share.

I borrowed a digital camera today from the college library and my wife took some pics of me riding around where we live. We still need to play with the shutter speed because it was difficult to capture any images while I was in mid-air. (Any suggestions or help with that would be great.)

The township just dumped all of these poles here last week. Pretty sweet place to practice, except many of them are loose.

I just started practicing my front wheel hops this week. I can get about 5 hops at this point.

Cool photos...

I've seen your posts in the beginner section...you look like a more advanced beginner than me! I gotta get out and ride more, if this rain ever stops!

Timing for in-the-air photos: it is tough. My 7 year old daughter took some photos of me once. I'd count down from 3 to let her know when I'd drop off a boulder. Somehow her shutter timing and my launch timing were perfect on a bunch of tries. Just lucky I guess.

Thanks. Now that I am done with school for the summer and I am not working at the moment, I've been riding a minumum of 2 - 3 hours a day. I am planning on attending a lot of comps this summer, so I really want to get in as much practice as I can.

I just started riding trials this past December and just turned 36 today, so I need to make up for a lot of lost time! (Gettin' old!!! heh heh)

As far as the camera stuff goes... we tryed many different ways to capture me in mid air, but with no luck. I think it might be easier to video me riding and then take the pics out of that. Not sure of the quality though.

LOL - Thanks. I really didnt want to post the pics because the riding level by so many guys on this site is so amazing! But I figured... "hey, everyone started out somewhere!"

I am hoping to bring my camera up to Green Lane this weekend because there is nice natural stuff up that way.

P.S
Glad to hear that you recieved the downtube guard I sent ya and that it is working out for ya.

work on your dropping technique. Do it controlled instead of staying way back and then doing 1-2 pedal kicks do get even near the edge and doing another pedalkick to drop.
I can tell by the pics that you do it rushed and wrong(like i used to do)

Thanks for the advice.

You are right in saying that I needed to do 1-2 slight pedal kicks to get near the edge. Then when I thought my wife was ready to take the pic, I did a pedal kick off the edge instead of just dropping.

I can pretty much stay close to the edge without falling. Are you saying that I should approach the edge without doing any pedal kicks?

Also, do you mean I should practice just dropping instead of doing a pedal kick off the edge?

nice pics, how do you like the hi-fi? Front hops are tough I wish I could do them better, but they sure do impress people

Thanks dude.

Yeah, I like my Hi-fi. I really don't have anything to compare it too except I was involved with freestyle and racing BMX since I was young. When I first got it, I was like. "Oh crap! This bike is hard to ride!" It really felt weird. I got use to it now and seems fine when I practice. My next bike will most likely be a lower BB just to see and feel the difference.

I think Cryo means, get to the edge, (take your time, don't freak out) and then let the front wheel drop. As your front wheel reaches roughly the same level as your rear tyre, release the brakes and pedal slightly. If done right it will feel like you hardly dropped.

Eddie Toungue used to do mean drops, where he would drop his front wheel below the edge of the drop and land like a cat!!

Nice pics by the way!!:)

get your wheel so it's actually slightly over the edge, so you don't need to kick it off just let off the brake. you can then drop your front wheel as low as you want without having to worry about your back wheel getting caught on the top of the table.

Oh, ok. Thanks guys. I'll have to try that today when I go out and practice.

The height factor does not seem to bother me. What does make a difference to me is when I am up semi high on a narrow ledge. It takes me forever to build up enough confidence to get that front wheel up and then drop. I guess over time this won't be such an issue for me. I also need to work on my track stands on skinny obstacles.

yes thats what i meant. Its important that you pedal slightly, dont do a pedal kick and dont jump up or forward. The best way to drop ist to roll over the edge with your rear tire. It seems scary at first but the sooner you learn it the better for you.
Also on high drops. Bend your legs as much as you can before rolling the rear down the edge (your ass should almost touch the rear tire). When you are falling, extend your legs (on high drops your body should be totally vertical and extended.)
