What it boils down to is that there's more technically minded people in trials than other bike sports. I suppose we're also somewhat perfectionists and I guess we tend to be the problem-solving sorts.

Another thing is that we don't appreciate being asked to do 102 question surveys.

YODA, it's "sensing", not "sensitivity. This just means that you use your intuition more than your sensing capabilities to interpret the world. Whether you are sensitive or not has to do with the F or the T in your type.

It's pretty accurate. I would add that while I am a perfectionist I tend to become overwhelmed easily, but this is probably true for many perfectionists.

In the end, I think the Type 5 personality thing describes me the best. Regarding the Variant score though, I am a little confused how I can score the highest on the withdrawn traits and then the second highest on the assertive traits. I'm not assertive with other people, but I suppose I am assertive in my mind. I get frustrated and emotionally involved while thinking things over. Maybe that is what that means. I conflicting interpretations of the Self Preservation heading.

Trials helps me keep things simple enough to work on perfecting them. I also ride a brakeless fixed gear roadie for the same reasons. Just as fixed gear riding is all about being focused and in control, trials promotes a sense of concentration unlike other types of riding. I find that trials is very much about visualization and that moment of idealism before one attempts a move. In contrast, downhillers and trail riders are always talking about relaxing and moving with the bike and terrain. These types of riding focus more on sensation and being in the moment (the ubiquitous "flow").

I could never handle riding at speed on a freewheeling bike. I would always keep pushing it until I crashed. This is because I ride for technique more so than fitness. Technique is more abstract and intuitive than fitness. Conceptually fitness is boring, and so no matter how practical it could never be my main goal.

Keeping my bikes as simple as possible is also a big reason for me choosing the types of riding I do. The simpler the bike the less marketing I have to sift through to make my bike right. Also I can do things the bike wasn't strictly designed for with less risk of breakage. There is also less for me to worry about going wrong. My bike can become as intuitive as my body. I only need to attend to it when I feel that something is a miss, instead of being bogged down in maintenance.

While I do enjoy understanding technology I am somewhat of an anti-technological romanticist. Frankly I could never love cars because there is just too much involved in understanding them. An I need to understand EVERYTHING about those things I love. Hell, I prefer titanium to steel primarily because I wouldn't have to paint it. Paint is damn confusing.

My trials unicycle is wicked simple, but the inability to trackstand on obstacles causes me to tire out too quickly. Trials bikes allow more interesting maneuvers and positioning too.

Attrition can definitely weaken a mind's ability to inquire, but is it right to legitimize it so? On another forum I've seen a bot's thread turn into a valuable discussion of the topic raised, dispite it's dubious origin.

It's a scary thought that one has to prove oneself as worthy of consideration. Even though I think financial support is a noble thing in this case, I would not use it as a measure of somebody's ideas. I believe that it would make for a frightful society, that was very limited in it's adaptive abilities.

For example, did you know that DIAF also stands for the Jung personality type: Dominant Introverted Abstract Feeler? These are well known psychology tests by the way.

I just looked at the quiz just for the fun of it, and the entire quiz asks only like 5 questions in 100 different ways. wtf?
I think this is so the test can be more accurate. Language is a nuanced approximation of the truth and the more ways one says something the less likely it is that it will be misinterpreted.

justtysen, the Jung-type personality tests aren't that widely used anymore. Tests based on the semantic-based OCEAN or big five theories of personality are far more widely used and (in my opinion) legitimate.

I'm not sure what attrition (of the mind?) has to do with this thread.

It's not scary to think that one has to prove oneself as worthy of consideration. One has only to post something intelligent, or which contributes, or entertains, to be worthy of consideration as a valuable member of the community.

Also, I'm sure DIAF can be contrived to form a personality "type" in a misleading sense, however that's not what I meant that acronym as. It's an observedtrials.net in-joke. There are lots of those here. A dominantly young or young at heart, casual membership is what keeps things interesting here.

Don't take anything you read too seriously. particularly from any prolific posters or supporters :)

I didn't mean to suggest that the Jung-types were to be trusted, but I did want to make the point that the test does carry some authority even if it is purely of historical nature. The result being that anyone not so complacent with their beliefs as to post without following the link would more likely see the thread as legitimate.

My other point was that this forum's history of bogus postings does not justify it's member's disconcertion of newbies. And in my opinion neither does sarcasm, but I do see the fun in it... and also the deceit. I hesitate using the word misleading because that presupposes that one can be lead appropriately.

I'm more of a opinion drifter and I guess just not cut out for gated community life.:hs:
