hey guys

I am going to go rear disk...sick of maguras and don't like V's. I am thinking of the hope trials disk. Are there any hope adaptors that can be used to make a 8 inch rotor work on a 6 inch frame?

I am also looking at the avid juicy seven rear disk. What do you think that would be like for locking power with an 8 inch disk?

Yo chris, you can definitely get an adapter. I know there are some on universal cycles. http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/index.php?category=496

Good luck with rear disc. I never used the hope trials, but I know I wasn't happy enough with how mine grabbed. Good luck.

My mate has a Hope Trials 160mm on the rear of his Monty mod, and it's pretty horrible. The bite is okay, but the lock is rather poor.. I'd go for an Avid(either the Juicy or BB7)

I just switched from a dirt jumping background so I don't know about the hope, but the avid juicy pretty much the strongest in terms or raw power between the MTB brakes.

If you get a juicy get a 5 as their just as powerful as the 7, and the 7 might have a more progressive feel as its main use is DH.

Also have a look at the hayes el camino as it has a power knob, its supposed to be pretty bitey when on full.

Yes good luck running rear disk. I replaced many rotors becuase of bending them. Side hops gone wrong. I wont use disk again on the rear.

Avids are good, one problem with them that I know about is when they get too hot they loose grip. Shouldnt be a problem with trials. The Hayes El Cameno are not very good.

The Hayes El Cameno are not very good.

are they not good for trials, or just plain not good brakes?

I never felt a nice El Camino, thought the adjustment features just made too many extra things to make the brake not feel good. I had a Hayes Mag with an 8" rotor with EBC reds, and it had amazing lockup.

For that matter, didn't really like any of the Avid hydraulic discs for a solid feel either. For XC, sure, but I wouldn't use them for trials. However, anything with an 8" rotor should have sufficient stopping power.

look at the Formula brakes
all the reviews i have read have been really good
plus they designed the Juicys for avid

So I guess they are pretty comprable to the juicys? but yea, I hear theyre amazing, but havent tested them yet....really curious.

I wouldn't waste your time going to rear disc. Like the others....been there, done that. Lots of hassles...pads slipping, bending rotors, easily gets dirty....and so on. Stick to what works. Rim brakes for the rear.

yeah pretty much. The most adventurous have tried, and they're back down here with rim brakes and european pros...

Enter pro-disk formula post:

:dunno: I'm back on a rear disk brake on my new frame. The only reason I didn't have one on my mod was because of the price/weight of using the brake therapy adaptor. If you put a avid bb7 on there setup right with an 8" rotor you will never complain about your brake again. No more grinding. Works perfect in all weather conditions.

I guess others have other experience, but living in the northwest (it rains A LOT in the winter) I really enjoyed having rear disk.

I've run a couple disc brakes in the rear and quite like them. Currently, I have a Marta (w/ Monty pads) on the back of my Monty mod. I have slid off a few things but never hit the disk (knock on wood) mostly because the tire is so wide. I also have a Hope M4 mono on the back of my Monty stock bike. With the stock pads, it creeps a little, but when they're wet, the performance is outstanding. I will try some other pads in the near future. I went to disc because I really hate grinding rims, but a nothing locks up like a fresh ground rim! Right now, I think it's personal preference as to which system you chose.

Thanks for all the replies. I have to build a new rear wheel anyways because my hub is shit and my try all rim is getting really weak. So I just bought a single speed disc hub yesterday and got a rim comming... I am trying out a friends hayes mech and an avid to see if I like it. If not I can easily go back to the maggie.
