I am very aware that you guys are about to consider me a huge idiot.... but... I'm so tempted to rub some tar on my rotor right now... will this actually ruin my pads? and is there any other downside to it.

Can you really not get enough power out of your disc brake that you want to try tar?

kiss your pads goodbye

Modulation > locking for the front wheel IMO

why do you want no modulation for your street bike? that's retarded. let it wear in and you'll wonder what the fuck you were thinking.

Dr Game
05-02-2006, 10:23 PM
lol, because I never use them for street and when I do use them I want them locked, I've ridden breakless for the past bit, and its amazing... So I only need them for locking... only thing i could think of needing modulation for is manuals... which I don't....

BUT ANYWAYS... thanks for informing me that new avids suck... I will try my best to wear them in then, thanks a lot everyone.

if you put tar on your disc brake it will lock extremely well with 0 modulation.....once, then you have to retract pads by hand :)), i tried it on a 10$ discbrake china made with wood pads i think and it works great but that is not a brake it`s something but not a brake paid 10$ for the whole sistem dough:)))

Burn them in REAL good and they should have enough grab to ruin your rear frame/hub/wheel with the kind of grap a properly burned in bb7 should have.

If you don't have a hill to shuttle run, then try hanging onto a friends truck and rail the brake a couple times at speed.

Rub mud/water/dirt all over it, go down a hill and hit the brakes...it's the foolproof way to breaking in pads.

I use water to break in pads with dragging. About 5 mins riding in circles. works good. But proper setup is better. Look for recent thread.

does water actually help brake them in, or is that a joke?

thats what people say. i have no idea if it actually really helps. Who cares just do it

Nah it's the truth, I'm not exactly sure why it works but does.
I'm sure people will now come up with 2342526 different reasons for the why, let me start:
1) Cause it does.

I usually go riding, when disk is dry it won't lock so good, but when i put a bit water and ride, then it's much better

water works, do it. I didnt believe it either at first, but it really does help.

Take your pads out
dip them in pure rubbing alchohol
and then burn the bad material with a blowtorch
let cool and then reinstall
if it was anything on your pads or if you want to skip the wearing in faze then use this

wow water was amazing.. i put it on... pedaled around for only a minute, and presto... they now lock... it's insane how it did that...

When you bed in a disc it basicly means your 'smoothing' the disc. The pads effectivly polish the disc. When you put water on there it makes the pads softer, (why discs work good in wet weather) and it helps the disc get all shinny and .... i'm running out of words now but the water acts like any kind of polish, like brasso etc.

I'm sure that dosn't make a lick of sence.

I was thinking of getting a front disc brake and if I do I will put water on it.

How about rubber disc pads?

Thats a good idea, I think it would last long with the holes/slots and high powered ball screw/hydraulic pistons! I dont know why they wouldn't make that:nono:

was it plazmatic pads that were tested as a disk? they were awesome but wore fast and sucked in the wet, i believe. they'd probably explode into chunks if you went down a big hill and braked.

if i ever need a bit more power out of my disk temporarily... just spit on it. turns my avid from 'good' to 'fucking deadlock' for about 5 minutes.

What if he ground his rotor first?? Woudl that work with rubber pads? It works for rim brakes :hsugh:
