Right ive got a internal headset (Cane Creek Zero Stack). and Echo team mod forks, ive put the cups bearing crown race etc into the frame and done it up but theres a tiny gap about 1-2mm inbetween the bearings and the fork steerer. causing it to rock and feel loose etc its almost as though the steerer tube is too thin for the headset. but i cold be missing a essential part of the headset or something so id appreciate if someone told me how to fix it or why its happening, even suggestions would be nice. So far the headset consits of 2 Cups. 2 Bearings (obviousely more but 2 sealed sets of) 1 Crown Race. 1. Cane Creek Cover. 1. Spacer. i have tried using more spacers and that didnt fix it pics are below(the crown race and other bearing arent pictured but i have them). Also in the picture of the problem i have removed the bearings so you can see better.

the cover with the logo typically goes on top of the bearing and has a snug fit with it - it either has an O-ring which makes a snug fit, in turn, with the steerer, or there is a circular wedge which goes on top of the cover and makes a fit with the steerer.
There has to be a gap between the bearings and the steerer because it's not the steerer which contacts the bearings - it's the cap which is shaped to fit onto the top of the bearing!

if making no sense, show detail shots of what is installed, and what you have left.

Thanks for the fast replies, i appreciate it, i understand what you mean tomac however i dont have a o ring or aything that would fit inbetween, as pictured below thats what the underside of the cover looks like, it appears theres a part which is more inward for something like you described to fit it. i apologise for the crap pictures, also what you described would stop it happening to the top but it happens to the bottom also

The last two pics you show are the crown race. Didn`t you install it an the fork first? If you already have something on there take it off and put the piece in the last pic on instead. It doesn`t just slide on it has to knock on flush on the bottom of the fork.If you put a different piece on for the crown race that would be the piece to install an top of the upper bearing then install the top cap then your spacers or stem. Both the crown race and the compression ring ( upper cone aka centering sleeve) have a protrussion (sp?) on the inside that sits around the steerer and face into the bearings taking up the gaps you have. I wish I had pics to show you what I mean, sorry and good luck.

i really dont think the 'cover' is the crown race, just to show i have pictured the crown race, as you can see it has a part in the middle which sticks up, do i need something similar for the top?

I may be dumb for saying this but have you installed everything and tried tightened it? So you're just not looking at it seeing a gap when it is not fully installed. I had a cane creek on my ilions and I had no probs with it. Cant remember anything about installation to help you though, sorry.

what about the plastic thing, or it is sometimes metal that goes on the top that wedges in when you tigheten everytihng down?

the part i am talking about is the silver metal peice, on the left it is the 3rd peice from the top, and on the right the 4th peice from the top

It looks like you're missing the "split cone" that drops in from the top. Cane Creek uses a delrin cone that works with the top bearing cap and the bearing race and wedges between the steering tube and bearing as you tighten the headset. I don't see one in your pictures.

yep you are missing a compression wedge that fit under the top cover piece. you need that in there to act like the wedge that you see on the bottem race
