I am working on obsticles for the sport class. Elan and others suggested things that were roll up type. What heights? I am thinking of a two foot to a four foot and back to a two,
something like a series of steps that would include some type of balance sections between them.
I also want to throw in a four foot obsticle or two. Am I making these to hard? Any positive feedback is welcome.

From the NATS rules:

Drops not to exceed three feet, and drops over eighteen inches must allow for side dropping. the takeoff areas for all drops over eighteen inches high should be reasonably flat and smooth and with substantial grip. In the even of low grip, such as slippery rocks, riders should not be over eighteen inches off the ground.

With that in mind, I've definitely seen sport sections that go over cars. As long as the 4 foot obstacles are fairly large it should be ok.

Hey J,

i noticed 2 times b4 at St Jo, the obstacles were hella close together and it was hella hard doing such tight sections, ya know with da long wheelbases we're seeing now. Remember most folks will ride sport! No pressure....

Good luck J

How much space is good for a run up? I was thinking about 6 or so feet for me(as if I ever landed anthing!!) so about 4 feet? I've got about 65 pallets to work with, and I have been experimenting with different building techniques, so I think I can come up with some interesting lines.

For a balance line I was thinking about 8 inches wide for sport about 18 inches off the ground and 4 inches wide for expert/pro about 2 feet off the ground, maybe about 10 feet long.

I dunno about run up, but when you're taping off lines more rom is better

Make A frames /\ /\ with pallets and people can rear wheel them or get through them however they can.

I wouldn't do to many easy ramps up to obstacles.

You'll do great J!!! I can't wait meet you, anyone starting trials and doin' comps after 40 has balls in my book!

The biggest problems last year was that the sections were too close to each other. The sport sections were also a little on the harder side. That was my fault. It seems easy to set harder sections when you don't have to ride them :D As far as space for run ups goes, I would allow for 2 bike lengths (stock bike) in the sport sections.

Hey Dave- How's the back?

Right, A frames might be played in trials nowadays.

use one of the cars for sport class, tons of comps do it, everyone wants to ride a car!

Or a teeter totter balance beam like last time, that was cool.

Lots of small-medium sized rocks. If you can roll more than two bikelengths it is too easy

Back in the day, sport sections = sections of increased difficulty over beginner, but nothing should force the rider to use rear wheel moves.

But now adays people learn how to sidehop 4 feet before they can ride a balance beam for 4 feet so who knows.

So many people forget the basics. they're like "I wanna do a ten foot drop like the guyths in that video I saw in the internets" and only work they're skills toward that. That being said, I suck at sidehopping.

sport sections are fun because you can give them easy sections and hard sections and not lose too much sleep over it. wanna ride sport? gotta have some skills but you won't be too bored. wanna move up to expert? try this on for size...
it's been a while since i helped string sections, so i'd imagine there may have been a shift in skill levels or something. that, and sport sections look a lot more fun than expert when i'm filling out entry forms these days...
