View Full Version : Switching brakes to Euro

I've always ridden my bikes with euro style brake setups. Motorcycles all have their front brakes on the right so it has always been less confusing to keep bike and motorcycle brake setups the same.

while digging through the forums and looking at product descriptions, I realized that I don't know how to purchase a brake setup for euro style.

What I'm confused about is that the product descriptions all say front or rear, but this is assuming the front lever would go on the left and rear would be right. Would I be buying a front lever setup to use for the rear and vica versa?

This is, of course, a problem if you have two different brake setups. There's no simple flipping the cables around with, say, HS33's in the rear and Louise in the front. So, in this case, would I be buying a 'front' HS33 lever and a 'rear' Louise lever and then run cabling euro?

If you are buying a complete bike (like you mentioned in the other thread), talk to Tim/Webcyclery and I'm sure you can either order a bike that way, or they can do the swap for you.

At least on the old hs-33s, I know you can run them flip-flop without any problems, just looks funny. With a Louise, I'm not sure that it is possible; depends on how the fluid reservoir is positioned.

PS.. most "euros" run their brakes same as in america (left-front, right-rear). In general if the country has cars which drive on the left side of the road, they will have their brakes opposite (Oz, Japan, the UK,etc..); I think it has to do with the bike laws in the countries for signalling turns. So call it moto-style instead of Euro style.

most places will sell you brakes set up " moto style "
I grew up in the u.k. and now I live in the u.s so i've had this problem. Hs33's you can just switch the lines over but if you buy a disc brake dont get a " us " rear thinking you can use it on the front cause the calipers are front/rear specific, call and order is your best bet.
