Get "Art of Trials", a DVD by Ryan Leech. Great instructional video for trials!

Begin learning the trackstand. Roll slowly, and then lock both brakes. Turn the front wheel away from your dominant foot (chocolate foot), and move your hips around to keep your balance. Don't be disappointed if you don't get it first try: it usually takes a while to learn. You may only get a couple seconds before you loose your balance. If you do, it is better to roll away than to put your foot down.

You can practise plenty of basic moves, just playing around with the bike
See this http://www.trashzen.com/balance.html section for some tips.
Cheers:)
