Dan and I will be working hard to make this one of the most interesting comp's that WE have been to....and it will be fun and challenging for all.
Is this going to be normal trials rules?

It looks like it will be set up UNI Trials rules with a twist. There will be a big area of obstacles!! You will have to sign up as the usual Beginer, Sport, Expert, Pro. But there will not be a section per-say, but a single obstacle that you must clear UCI style ( no pedal, or bashguard). The obstacles will be marked with the rider ability level. We will prevent sandbagging!!! If you enter sport and decide to hit one sport section and 7 expert sections..........well guess what your an exp. rider. When I spoke with Dan last about this we where going to give different point's to different ability level sections and you must choose your sections and rack up the point's. There will be a given amout of sections that way it is as fair as possible. And also, you can only hit a given section twice. I might be missing something so competitors ASK away. I am in a bit of a hurry, so I can't be as descriptive as possible. Dan chime in if I missed something. I am sure I did ;)

Yes, only Rubber Cleans count. No dabs whatsoever. However, the sections are very short, the maximum allowed by the rules is 30 feet in length. To compare, NATS rules require MINIMUM of 30 feet per section. Because of these unique rules, and the sections being so short, expect some pretty unique section elements!
Here's the draft of the rules I posted several months ago.
Exerpt from OMBC trials rules.
4. Rules of Competition
The course is made up of 30 to 60 sections. Sections should be considerably shorter than traditional observed trials sections, preferably no longer than 30 feet, with the average being about 15 feet. Each section is to be marked with a point level, as noted below. The point scoring should directly reflect the difficulty of the section, and is related to the skill level of rider it is designed for.
Beginner sections are worth 1 point
Sport sections are worth 2 points
Expert sections are worth 3 points
Elete sections are worth 5 points
Separation between 20 and 26 inch classes is at the discretion of the ED.
The event must have a pre determined number of sections that must be ridden
This number is referred to as a quota, and is between 20 and 30
Riders must complete their section quota in order to place in the event (usually 20-30 sections)
This number is announced at the Rider’s Meeting
Failure to meet quota is a DNF
Riders have a set time limit to complete their section quota for the event (usually 2-3 hours)
Time limit is announced at the Rider’s Meeting
Riders are allowed, time permitting, a maximum of 5 sections completed over quota.
A rider may only receive credit for completing the same section 2 times.
In order to attain credit for a section, the rider must complete the section “Clean” with NO DABS.
No contact with the ground or obstacle other than the tires is permitted.
Bash guards, pedals, Forks, Body Parts, etc. may not contact the ground/obstacle.
Sections may be attempted in any order
A rider may not attempt the same section twice consecutively.
Once a section is completed, it may not be removed from the scorecard for any reason
Sections of all point levels are available to all riders, however, if a rider completes more than 30% of their section quota in a higher category than they registered in, they will be automatically be bumped up to that category. (example: in a 20 section event, a sport rider completes 14 sport sections, and 6 expert sections, that rider is automatically bumped to expert)
Sections should be ridden in a quick manner to keep the pace of the competition moving along.
If necessary due to time constraints, timers may be initiated at ED’s descretion.
When time is elapsed, an announcement is made. Riders currently IN SECTION may complete Their sections. No rider may enter a setion after this announcement is made.
An announcement will be made 30 minutes 10 and 5 minutes before time expires.

I so wish I could come down for the comp, but due to work, and physical ailment, I will not be able to make it. Did any one here know that you're not supposed to rear wheel to a picnic table top with a hernia?!?! I would have never thought!! Now I have to go in for surgery to get a piece of mesh sewn in to repair the stomach wall/muscle. Ow well, at least the mesh has a bunch of predrilled holes in it. Best wishes from Buffalo, Everyone ride well.

Here's a few pictures from the comp. I had a blast. The new format was fun, everything seemed to go on schedule and the sections covered every skill level. (I think there were something like 53 sections.) Thanks to everybody that had anything to do with this. Do it again, I'll be back.

First off, big props to Dan "Given To Fly" Smith and his crew for getting this together.
This was the first time I've ever done a comp with this sort of format so I really didn't know what to expect. I was very impressed thought.
In a nutshell, to complete the comp , you turn your scorecard in with 20 sections completed. You pick the sections out of the 55 or so that are setup. Some sections are tough and others are easy, and this is reflected in the point value of the section. (example: a "beginner" type section where the rider rides over a tire equals 1 point, but an "elite" type section where the rider kicks up and off the roof of car onto a platform equals 5 points).
Cool thing is, YOU ONLY MARK YOUR SCORECARD WHEN YOU CLEAN THE SECTION. So there are no fives, you only mark a section off your scorecard when you clean that section up to two times.
Again, it's hard to explain how cool this comp format is. Riding without the pressure of fiving out will definitely give you some added fervor to try bigger moves in a comp situation.
Anyways the exact rules are probably another thread on the forum so I won't go there, but I will say this sort of format allows the comp to run on autopilot without the E.D. running around babysitting everybody.
If you like riding urban, boy did you miss the wrong comp.
Section highlights includes:
A car, a couch, picnic tables, spool, barrels, benches, truck docks, tires, teeter-totter, pallets - you know, all the stuff we like.
Weather?
The rain from Rita didn't roll in until Sunday evening so the weather turned out beautifully.
For those considering putting on a comp in the future, here's a few things that Dan did this weekend that make a "textbook" successful comp:
Starting/Finishing on time - This is HUGE and Dan kept things moving right along and on schedule.
Nearby water/food/restrooms - We were in the village of a ski lodge so we were good here.
Easy registration - No inconvenient extra NORBA paperwork to deal with.
Spectator friendly - you couldn't have gotten any friendlier as you'll see when pix are posted. From one spot you could have seen at least 5 different cycling events up close. Also good music and an MC who kept the crowd posted with current event information.
Challenging sections - yup, sport sections seemed "sport like" and expert sections were right on the expert level.
Awards - started in a timely manner with cool "handmade Gonzo trophys" and good prizes from Tim at Trialsin USA (you can show your support by visiting trialsin.com for your next trials purchase)
Extras - gap contact, bike limbo contest, bunnyhop contest.
All in all, I give this comp a huge "Right On!" With all the negative feedback on the forums these days about biketrials, our small community needed a shot in the arm like this.
Thanks Dan & Megan, Mark K and the rest of the Cleveland crew, also all the OMBC crew for putting on such a great event.

Thanks Dan for such an awesome event. It turned out better than we could have imagined.
The competition allowed for every one to challenge themselves without riding outside of their comfort zone.
Angie and I intend to make all of your competitions from here on out, including the one at Ray's MTB park this winter. Whenever you need any help let us know and we'll be there ready to volunteer. WE had an awesome time helping set up. We've never gotten a chance to get involved like that before.
Thanks again, and great pictures!

Thanks also to the other people who lent a hand here and there, and especially to the people who helped us clean up after. Could not have done it without you.

Son of Gonzo was truly fantastic, there was so much energy there. "even though I hate trials so much" I couldnt help but have the best time riding with everyone.
Thanks Dan for getting those 50+ sections setup, and for remembering what it means to kickit old school Mickeys style.
For future reference, all trials comps should have at least one section involving a couch and one section with an "X-factor" plastic ramp.
