I still play with the Lynx Paralax clubs I bought back in 1992. Not that I've played much (once) since 2000.

If I knew you were a golfer, I would have broken my hiatus when you were in Baltimore last year. We could have played anywhere...for free.

To keep this post on topic: Nice shade of blue for the bike. Makes me want to rape a smurf.

Portland is 1000% better than MD/VA/DC as far as weather goes. The job market here sucks dong though. The unemployment rate is crazy high. I was fortunate that my Gov't customer wouldn't let me resign and set me up to work from home.

There is an outstanding selection of beer out here. They sell great local brews at the grocery and there are a few dozen micro's and craft breweries within a short riding distance from my house. I've purchased 2 new 6 packs each week so far and have only disliked two beers (both from Widmer).

I haven't found any good nearby MTB riding let alone any natural riding for trials. There is stellar riding within a few hours drive just not anything you could hit after work. I'm looking forward to when I can take some time to head up to Mt. St. Helens, out to Post Canyon and down to Bend. I hear nothing but great comments about all those places. There's some decent MTB riding about an hour away on the coast, but it's still a bit muddy.

When I was thinking about moving here, I though that the area had a lot of cyclists (it does) and I naturally assumed that it was mostly cyclists who got around town on a bike. I think the truth of the matter is that there are just tons of regular people who bike everywhere, which is cool. This has got to be one of the best cities in the US for using your bike as a main form of transportation and so far I've found that the city is setup very well for people who choose to do so. They have pretty strong bike traffic enforcement here though. I've already had a warning about turning left on yellow and my wife got a $250 ticket (which we're fighting obviously)

Housing prices are much cheaper than MD/VA/DC. We couldn't afford to buy anything in that area and the house we bought out here ($185K) would have cost us well in excess of $300K out there. We're about 5 miles from the center of the city in a pretty convenient location. The western side of the river is pretty expensive though.

Downtown is cool, there's a lot of places to eat/drink and it has a nice small city feel. We've found everyone to be extremely friendly so far too which is nice. We even have our own carnie (20 years with the carnival) who walks his granddaughter around the block all day. I can't understand a damn word he says, but he's a friendly guy.

I understand there are some problems with Asian gangs and I've certainly seen a fair number of tweakers but nothing has been a problem yet. You don't hear about "tragedies" on the news here nearly as often as you do in DC.

Geographically, Portland is great. The coast is close and it's pretty amazing how much the landscape changes if I drive an hour in any direction. My only points of comparison are the Baltimore/DC area and Providence/Boston, though.

of the few places I've lived so far, the ratings go like this
1 - Portland
2 - Providence
3 - Baltimore
4 - DC

Boise
Vancouver (WA, not BC)

you'd want to live in salt lake city, and vancouver, WA is good but Vancouver, BC is no good? you poor poor confused man. No. BC seems great, but thinking realistic like. Everyone I've known to move from the US to Canada has had issues obtaining citizenship. I can't very well move to an expensive city like Van BC without the funds to support my living eh? There are many places around the world that I'd like to live, but having to wait years to get paid isn't on my list of priorities right now when I have a family to support.

Anyway, I was just clarifying which city.

I have seen you a few times in the body mod's forum, all I really use is great outdoors and offtopic, but finding people in offtopic is impossible.

yeah, in terms of best vibes and riding I would have to say sedona arizona, but finding a job out there is impossible. look to portland as already suggested, it was nice from what I can remember. Why not look at new england, like the vermont area, you would have great riding, and wouldn't be in teh middle of no where. Plus you could ride veitnam:)

Lived there for a week. It was awesome. Seems like an excellent place to live. I have no idea about employment there, but its great for riding/skiing outdoors stuff.

Sedona is one of the coolest places to be, no employment really, all pricey, retirement sorta place, but still awesome. Mountain bike heaven.

Like to check out Salt Lake City too, thinking of college out there. Seems nice.

That's awesome, I was dealing with the same thing. Right out of high school (1992), I had a 2 handicap, which I carried for a few years. I almost completely quit playing in 1995 but played maybe once or twice per year. Back then, I hit my clubs pretty far by most standards...8i=165, 4i=215, usually drove 280 to 310.

In 2000, my brother invited me out to San Diego for a tournament. I hadn't played at all for three years, I was 45 pounds heavier than I was in HS, less flexible and hadn't lifted for eight years (from lifting every day in HS) but I was hitting the ball freakishly long. In the first round, I overshot all the greens by 20-30 yards. After that, my brother insisted on choosing my clubs for me on every shot. 9i=180, 5i was going 220ish...it was insane. I don't think we ever had to use a long iron since we were both crushing our drives. I thought I was the shit when I flew a drive 360 until he smashed a 380 yard drive on the last hole. He hit driver, eight iron on the 544 yard par 5 18th hole. We won the tournament and 2 grand and I haven't played since.
