How do you do it? Also, how do you tell how much pad life is left?

Rubbing alcohol and a paper towel is all you need. A fresh grind on your wheel wouldn't hurt either.
Life left? How close are you to braking with nothing but plastic?

I use simple green and paper towels to clean crm's. Makes them Super Sticky.
For about 5 minutes. Then they go back to plain ol crms.

yes, and after cleaning the pads clean the brake surface with the alcohol paper towl. If your pads were dirty then your rim is too, they are always in contact.

I find sometimes, if I ride in water or let the rims get a little dirty, then I let them dry, the brakes work much better. Probably wears the pads down though, I hardly ever clean them?
