I have an XT crank here that I'm going to use for a special project. I'm going to take the spider off one way or another, but obviously I'd like to get it off cleanly. It's definitely a two piece (spider and crank) but what I can't tell is whether or not it's held in place by a non-removable lockring, or if it's pressed onto the crank arm and secured by sort of a broach. I whacked the piss out of it with a dead blow mallet and it didn't budge, but I'm sure that if it's pressed on, it'll take quite a force to remove it.

Guesses?

it is a press fit and then they mash the spline into the spider. good luck getting it off without fucking the crank up.

now that the pins are out, install the cranks onto a bike and ride it until it comes loose. maybe? sure....

That fucker's coming off one way or another, and it's going to be clean damnit. I think it's time to put it on a lathe.

You could try something like a automotive hub/bearing puller, but that might not be enough force and you might not be able to get a good grip with the tool. The best way is to find a machine shop or auto repair shop with a press. If you can find a good place it shouldn't cost too much.

yeah, im going to guess you need to press it off, is say support the spider and press down on the spindle (carefully, and put a piece of plate on it, as to not screw up the spindle, also id try heating the spider some, not too much tho, but just the spider, try to keep the crank part cool.....
