Insurance thing, must be signed up.
you can pre-ride the vail realestate though, thats all that really matters.
jp, are you bringing paul and tony out this year?
jpsnodab
05-09-2005, 11:04 PM
Hope so, thats the plan so far, tony, paul and phil and myself. we will be taking off on the may 28th and then stopping by ABA BMX national, in sac, ca. them heading of to vail. expect to be in vail by tuesday morning. We need more trials risers showing up, we have more street/bmx type riders than we do trials riders, this event has $$$$$ TV, tons of media!!!!! hope ya all can come out for this years event
well as for colorado, last years course > me. but graham will probably be riding this one, maybe cole...and of course vincent if he shows...not sure about people like kevin shriamizu, mike snyder, etc.

i wouldnt have ridden last year's course on a trials bike. same with the one in arkansas. supposing it was a course that favored a trials bike i would probably be more into riding. otherwise im plenty content staying behind a lens.

Just a up date, just got off the phone with Jeff L., he is tell's me that he has a lot of guys coming to this years Teva Games speedtrials event. And got word that Vince is coming back and got an email from Team Poland they are sending over 2 riders. Kevin had said if the cousre was more of an trials course he would do it. Even though I love his work behnd the lens as well. but would rather have him riding. Hey, trials guy's I have tried to keep this course as much trials as I can, but here's the problem. We are getting alot more interest from the street guys, from this years sign-ups so far we will have twice as many street riders.
This is a SpeedTRIALS event where we get a $3000. purse, paying 8 deep. With an entry fee of only $35. bucks and on National TV. What other event even comes close to all this.
I wish I could make it more or totally all trials, but without more trials riders coming we will loose this to the street riders. The course will be the same as last year for the most part. With seeing the races from last year where Jeff and Vince were side-by-side going head to head, one being totally trials in Vince and all street style in Jeff. The course looked very fare to each type of rider. I hope to see more trials rider come so I can ask for more of a trials type course. Can't do it without your support. I would like to say a BIG thanks to the Colorado guy's who have come out every year to support the event. We can always depend on the Colorado guy's to support trials, whatever style it may be.

I think people will realize that JP, and appreciate your efforts...street is just too big to ignore, gotta listen to the people with the cash and please them.

05-16-2005, 12:16 PM
i hear ya jp. with more street style people entering the event you have to make the course so they are making it all look good. this is a big event with lots of "pros" showing up to represent the sport and cycling in general. having a pure trials course for them would be like putting on a "dh" race but having it go uphill on a paved road for 5 miles. i would much rather see a more streety course like last year's and having people just shred the crap out of it!
ill be up there this year regardless of whether im riding or working a little plastic and metal box. it's always fun just beign around the people.

So who is all planning on going?
For lack of better articulation: How good to you have to be to ride the course?
Judging from last year it seems like the course is suitable for expert+ level riders or sport level with extensive "urban" skills.

dean riders weren't riding the event last year. first obstacle was rediculously hard.

we are redesigning that first obstacle so the backside is rideable. this should make it alot better for everyone.

JP,
Last year I thought it was a cool course, but it definelty benefitted the street riders and was a street riders course. My problem with that is the event is called Speed "TRIALS". I understand if that is what you want but it should not be associated with trials. If you want to use the trials name I think there should be more trials obsticals/elements. There needs to be elements that slow-up the pace for both types of riding. If you are going to combine trials with street riders the course needs to be equally fair. The course last year was not fair as you saw the world champion trials rider, Vincent, take second place to Jeff Lenosky, who is a great rider but no Vicent. Use the same obstials you had last year but add at least three more trials elements: a big-up, a section of at least four rails that are hub to hub apart in distance, and at the end of the long narrow ramp, have a 2-4ft box instead of a transistion ramp. That is the only way I see there being more trials riders. Just food for thought.
Don't know if I am going to be able to make it out this year but I hope it all works out. I don't want to bash and tell you what to do, cause I am thankful for all you do for the sport. So just take this as the opinion it is and do what you will.
Later, Derek

I read this:
" TEVA MOUNTAIN GAMES, June 3-5 (http://www.tevamountaingames.com/). Be there or be square! Lenosky is running the event and designing the course. It's called speed trials but it's more like a street riding race! Instead of all kinds of hopping fast, J-Lo is building two identical street courses and everyone is going to race through them...just like speed trials. I think they may make it so some trials guys can ride it, but there was a huge response from the street community on this, so it's going to be heavy on the street obstacles. I know that Lenosky, Chase, Porter, Voreis, and A TON of other people are going. "
it would be awesome if vincent owned their faces this year

Hey Guys,
It's true, I got hired to build the course this year. There was a little "drama" but no big deal, all that matters is that the event will be awesome, and there will be a lot more riders than last year. As far as last years course, we've been debating whether or not it should be called speed trials, bicycle steeple chase, freeride challenge or whatever. In my opinion "trials" doesn't have to mean "slow" but other riders want the name changed. This year will definitely be more freeride oriented, but it is a direct result of the lack of the support the event got in the past from the trials community. In the past few years they've struggled to get more than a small handfull of riders two years ago they paid 8 deep and couldn't even get 8 riders! This year we'll have guys flying in from all around the US to give the event a shot, it will be a lot of fun. Personally, I don't care which style of riding the event caters to since I would enter either style. As far as last years course, everyone claims it was to "streety," I designed the course last year to be close racing for riders of different styles. Vincent Hermace is a World Class Trials rider, Aaron Chase, Eric Porter and myself are considered to be World Class street riders. Somehow Chris Clark snuck in there, but the racing could not have been closer between us. It's not fair to compare local trials riders with top street riders and say the event wasn't fair because we were faster, Vincent proved that!! He would have been faster than a top regional street rider. It's going to be a great race this year, and I hope everyone comes to compete or at least watch.

Well, you can't fault riders for not showing up the first year of the event. Events in the US in the past have promised huge purses for riders but often fizzle out after everyone has already spent the cash to show up, so you can't exactly pin it on a "lack of support from the trials community".
I'm glad to see riders supporting the event, regardless of their style of riding. If you don't like the direction the event is taking, don't go, or better yet, step up and put on your own event! Trials in the US is falling apart not because of events "evolving" such as this, but because nobody will step up to put on full-on trials events...so don't bitch about it, do something about it.
Jeff, great job supporting these events.

colorado has an awesome scene. we got jerked around one season so i tried to put on an independant series the next year where all the issues were taken care of. aside from the first event, all i ever got was 3-5 riders to show up. i barely covered the expense of materials and if i counted gas, it cost me a bunch of money. many trials riders are quick to complain and often fail to follow through on any action.

This seems to be a worldwide phenomenon.

Seriously, well put Kevin.
I think thats why I haven't been quite so serious about trials the past 3+ years...the bikes get more and more rediculous and specific, yet the sport is struggling from a competition standpoint, particularly in the US.

speed trials is the only valid reason for the gears rule haha. Trials is hard to support because you tend to put in a lot of time and money and not get much back. If i were a trust funder, man i would organise some wicked series! But im not, and work a lot.
This event sounds awesome, wish i could be there. I expect quality vids.

compete? I doubt very few if any... unfortunatly it's too far and expensive for us Canuckers to trek down. Nonetheless, it sound like a great event tho. Can't wait to see the course and footage from the event. With all this course design as of late Jeff is going to become the Nate Wessel of Mountain biking.
My favorite speed trials event ever was the Bike UK one in Contact, very fun sections.
PS - Hey jeff try and get Lutze to re-release all the old reed videos on one plain dvd. I'd kill for a copy even if it was a bootleg white label.
