View Full Version : Trials Drivetrain
Hello,
This is my first post on this forum.
I just bought a Planet X Ghost frame. I am not sure what kind of parts to use for the drivetrain. I've heard some people use a road derailleur and cassette? What range should I have in my cassette? 12-23 Teeth? Also, are road components compatible with mountain bike components? Would I have to get a different shifter? I am trying to keep the cost down, so I just need parts that would do the job. Nothing fancy.
get cheap ass road cassette and derailleur and a cheap ass sram shifter... make sure your speeds match.

Consider singlespeed. You can build something simple and tuff as nails, and lighter than gears.
Otherwise use whatever your LBS has in the bargain bin from 1998 and use the barrel adjuster with a blocked cable to shift.

Also by going single speed you can adjust your chainline perfectly so your chain/drivetrain will last longer w/ your desired gear...simple is better...
Single speed actually came up as an option for me...
But im just not sure if i can have a decent gear for pedalkicking, while still being able to ride around. That's the only thing thats really stopping me.

just run 22-18... you have a seat on that bike so you can coast easier when pedaling places...

I use a modified rear cog, spaced out my 3 most common/praactical gears for commuting and trials. Im eventually going to knock it down to 2 gears.
