VLC media player (http://www.videolan.org). Will play just about every video format that I know of except *.wmv. It is cross-platform and free. I highly reccomend it.

I have boycotted QT, I will never ever use it ever. I would rather miss out on any vid than download that shit.

I went to dl a vid and it asked if I wanted to install it, I said no fuck off and it still installed a little icon in my toolbar. Dirty cunt of a fucking thing.

WMP or Divx.

I use VLC or QT

There is no player for the mac that will play the latest WMV's. .wmv3 I think they are.

I'll never understand why anyone encodes their movies in anything but a cross platform standard. I would think you would want the widest audience possible. WMV blows chunks on a Mac (maybe QT sucks on a PC as well, never used it) you can't frame by frame, it's jumpy and looks like shit.

I don't know why QT installed an icon on your computer. That's very un-Apple like and I'm dissapointed they do that. Thats a major reason why I hate windows, the lack of control. For expample, you cannot fully get rid of IE, even though it's a piece of shit. When I'm on a PC I use Firefox, but IE always sits there wasting disk space, and startup time.

There was something a while ago i saw called M-Player, not sure if it was apple compatible though. From memory you had to compile it from source, which can be a pain in the ass...

I don't find winamp very good for a lot of videos, the playback speed goes all slow, and the frame rate appears to increase...i don't know what's going on

real player is the worst piece of shit. If oyu want to play real media files get the "real alternative" player, it lets you play the real files - without all the trouble and annyoing stuff from the real player.
VLC player is where its at.

More often than not, if a video won't play or the audio plays without video then you are missing the necessary codec to play the format in which the author encoded it.

That K-Lite (http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/) that "ia" mentioned above is a good option but I tend to shy away from anything attached to the Kazaa name because of their past spyware issues. Also, MPlayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/) can be compiled for Windows, Mac or Linux with a huge range of codecs but their getting shut down soon. VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) comes with a good range of codecs, too.

The most annoying thing I find with Windows Media Player is that it acts like it looks for a codec if you don't already have it but it never finds any and doesn't both to tell you which one it needs. When I need to find out what codec someone has used, I try to the video file in the Divx (http://www.divx.com/) player and it will normally tell me. Then, I go to FourCC (http://www.fourcc.org/) and find it. Once you have the right codec installed, you can use WMP or most any player.

Mplayer.....you can find sites where it's already compiled and made into an .exe file. Also, the GUI (front end or graphical user interface) is kinda shit for windows....but they have pretty decent ones, and MPlayer plays ALL files, including wmv and mov.....

They geting shut down possibly here soon because congress is wanting to do compyrights on software.....making it impossible now to get any kind of bootleg or alternative....yay for government...
