I was just wondering if there's any advantange using v brakes in the front with a grind vs a disc. I love riding natural stuff... and it's canada b.c. its wet here. I like the solid feeling compared to a avid mech but not that screeching when I do roll downs or try to slow down, hahaha. thanx

A Vee weighs less than a disc.
You can't bend a rotor.
It's cheaper.

vees r lighter. Discs won't be affected by wet weather, shitty weather. Maybe less choice of trials specific pads with vees.

and I'm pretty sure you can bend a rotor.

if you have a mushy avid, its not your avids fault, it probably wasnt set up properly. my avid is much moire solid than any vbrake i have feeled.

well, for my avid, I got the none moving side pad as close to the rotor as possible and it's still squeeshy compare to my v's. I somehow got my v's to feel super solid with almost no cable pull feel to it. maybe it's the fact that the avid runs longer cable than the v has to? so more flex? and yeah, I already put a little bend in my rotor so now it rubs the pad. can I straighten it?

you can try...use a small crescent wrench and try try and bend it back.

if you have a lever with adjustable "power", such as any avid sd lever, dial that all the way in or out,i forget which one. play with it until yo uiget the best feeling. Then make sure both ends of the cable housing are square as can be, and that they are set into the lever adn the caliper perfectly. you should make it short as possible. loosen the cable clamp on the disc caliper, re-tighten it, making sure that the actuator arm is at the very beginning of its swing. dont put any pressure on it at all when tightening the cable, then dial the moving pad in as far as you want. and of course , the static pad should be as close as possible without rubbing.

if that doesnt work, you did somthing wrong.

the thing is, despite any extra cable stretch or housing compression on a disc brake, a V-brake has 1000000X more flex in the arms and mounts.

If you use a brake booster, and set up your V-brakes very well, using good housing too (avid flakjacket), then I think V's can feel stiffer and more solid than anything out there. Im really picky with the squishy crap after you feel your brakes hit, so I have learned how to eliminate it. One thing I do like about V brake is that they stop the wheel at the tire, not at the hub. Even with tight spokes there is still some flex difference. I like the rim brakes for that as well, feels better on precise stuff like rails etc. to me. Oh yeah, with speed dial you want the dial all the way out to minimize squishyness.

Pads & overall cost of the brake set is cheaper...

The downside, slips like hell in rain, can't adjust the pads easily like the Avid's on the fly...

I miss having rear disc...

feh...if anyone runs any kinds of rim brakes (vee or hydro) without a grind they should be slapped in the face with my cock if they complain about it slipping.

Avid mechanicals in my opinion are the best disc brake for trials in my oinion...

nga what?

I complain about my rim brakes slipping, and i dont run a grind. Please slap me across the face with your cock.

vees are a load easier to set up and maintain, cheaper, stronger, however they lack the power of a disc, if its nicely set up vee it will be fine

A well set-up vee can equal or even exceed the power of some disc brakes (mechanical)...the only disc that i belive can't be outdone by any vee brake..is the Avid mechanical Disc
