View Full Version : Armor or no?

I don't know if it's the lack of health insurance or fear of inability to ride(or perform other tasks), but when or why do you shed the armor?

I run Hoot's crash shorts because I hate missed sidehop hip bruisers and slipped rear wheel loopout tailbone mashers. I also run some very restrictive Roach full leg armor, and well,. I don't see many people wearing armor at all. Some of my favorite riders from the "NW" do, but I watch these euro-videos and it seems like no one bothers.

What gives, other than the euro's in the videos are super rad at riding.

The thing that bothers me about it is how "stiff" I feel with all that gear, not to mention that it makes me sweat a LOT.

I need sugestions please.

I always wear 661 legs and gloves. Helmet too. I want some of those shorts you described...I'll prolly get em from 661 (40% off) because i hate thigh bruising. But, to answer your question, I always wear mine.

Its realy personal preferance. I use a helmet always and some times gloves. I do miss sidehops and slide down my leg, but i dont do it enough to wear pads. Some people, see pic, use a lot of pads. Also pads get really hot and nasty in the summer.

Ooh that guy is riding with hiking boots on? How does he ride with those?

Armor is just a personal preference thing, I wear a helmet, gloves, and shin guards. I think weight, comfort and restrictiveness is the biggest issue for most riders.

Kenny Belaey uses real thin shin pads, like a piece of plastic, under the black tights he wears.

if you bail a sidehop you should be able to put your foot closer to the object you're sidehopping onto up onto the object, and pull yourself up from there (almost like a dab, and then you lift yourself and the bike up). this way you'll never scrape your thighs and it's useful in comps.

it really depends what i'm doing that day -- if its an urban day, then 661 shin/knee, with my oakley or 661 gloves, and sometimes elbow guards... some urban days i'll even sport a fullface (but those get unbelievably warm). nobody i know wears those shorts, but it seems like a marvel idea cuz hip bashing happens a lot with me (or maybe i should just be more careful) :dunno:

I only ever wear helmet and gloves, i don't hit myself often enough to bother with anything else.

Having said that, i'd NEVER ride without a helmet or gloves.

The first time this year i wore shorts, and i scraped the back of my calf with my pedal due to a King slippage...Ouch.

I always wear a helmet, gloves, and light 661 shinguards. The gloves I wear aren't really much for protection though, I prefer really thin ones. I've scarred up my shins enough to want shinguards. Not really that often, but every four or five months, I'll just slam the pedal into my leg, and that doesn't feel good. It usually leaves holes from the screws. I've never had a problem scraping legs sidehopping though. I usually just do what Andreas said, put a foot on the object and there's no need for a bail.

I wear shitty bmx pads, shin-knee pads (30 bux from Canadian Tire--Trials on a budget, alll right) under my worn-in, loose jeans. The pads are lightweight, breathable and under my jeans no one can tell (just like my feminine protection). Gloves and road helmet make me cool and INVINCIBLE.

Gloves, helmet. I used to use Fox shinguards but the neoprene in them irritated my skin, got rid of them in the end.

I wear a Motor Cross helmet, Ice hockey shoulder pads, cup, ice hockey padded pants. My helmet has a face guard. I wear snow gloves with 2 long jumpers for extra padding no matter what the weather. I have full leg Guards used in motorcross as well as motorcross boots.
All of this gear generally keeps me pretty safe.

Here is attatched pic of what I really ride in and what most normal riders ride in. Its all you need really! Shinguards help a bit too but you get over them in hot summer days.

:ugh2: Yea,. I know,.. I know,. don't be a tool, sweat is bad, only poor people sweat,

I may just go to knee protection, that's what I'm really worried about when I bail.

I may just ditch the leg stuff alltogether for better flexxiblility and that fresh cool feeling.

Thank you for the input.

shed the shinguards usually after 6 months of riding, once you get some basic balancing skills.

Later on if you have a really bad shin hit you might want to put them on so that the same spot won't get ravaged again, otherwise nothing besides helmet and gloves is needed for this absolutely low risk sport.

How much do you weigh joel?

I'm an average size male (so I'm pretty huge in french terms like you mentioned) at 165lbs 5' 11",.. size ten shoe,.. you get the idea,.

Yea, I havn't slipped a pedal in a LOOOOnnnnnnng time. Ever since I started rockin' the fiveten sticky rubber shoes, it just dosn't happen. But for an old man like me (27yo) I hate the idea of ruining my already 'on their way out' knees. Hell I whacked my left kneecap right into a friggin X shifter on my friends photo-demo Ventana,.. drew blood of course.

Ahh,. Ventana,. I have a rad thread I'll start later about them,... maybe,.. (custom aluminum anyone?) I guess the owner used to ride moto-trials,.. 1200 a frame guestimate. We will see.

its all about my awesome $75cnd set of leg and arm armour. i only wear the leg tho. its almost identical to the 661 stuff that uses strips of plastic running verticallyl. its made by nukeproof tho. i run gloves too, but i havent found a pair that lasts longer than 6 months of twice a week use. im trying thor mx ones, my answer team 2's are dead, my answer world cups are dying. its not cool.
oh ya, i always wear a helmet.
