Found out some shit about 'plazmatic' coatings today.

Its a process called flame spraying, or plasma coating. You probably don't care but I'll tell you anyway. It involves buning a mixture of argon and hydrogen at around 16,000 degrees celcius, and introducing a metal powder (theres tons of these, alu, steel, titanium carbide, ceramics etc) which absorbs the heat of the flame and turns into small globules. It then fires onto the surface of the object you're coating and voila!!!
The temp of the object won't get hotter than 70 degrees celcius, and you can change the texture of the coating, and the thickness, although the thinner the more adhesion it has. You can spray tons of shit, everything apart from wood products and the human body basically, they even spray hip replacements!
So yeah, it kicks ass, no more grinding or tar, the only problem is you have to know some one in the industry.http://www.observedtrials.net/vb/images/icons/icon12.gif
Oh, and the price should be around the equivalent of $120 New Zealand dollars, unless you're good with your tongue......

who cares its heat protection for things that get hot. and its way to expensive.

I like grinding...I hate tar, and insulation.

I think plazmatic is a cool idea, if you knew someone it might make sense, but its just way too expensive to justify putting a temporary coating on rims that could break at any time. not too mention the fact that if it does last a long time, rims are not reuseable

it's for aeroplanes. It helps them pull up quicker upon landing. A canberra local (chemistry student) reproduced the formula fairly successfully upon their own rims many years ago as I recall.

Tomac - its hactually a hardening process for engine parts in high wear situations

I don't think its that expensive either, considering that it should last forever barring any big impacts to the sidewall of the rim. But yah, its pretty permanent, some of the compounds are so hard that it just wears diamond tipped tools away without affecting the surface much at all.

Anyway, I'm looking at getting it done to one of my rims, and if any of you Aussies want the treatment, I'm sure I could do the hookups.

So, where can I buy the powder for my flame spray set up?

im pretty sure its a heat resitant coating.. and its not cheap over 100 is expected

I actually think it's an ultra-conductive coating designed to increase the surface area and therefore the cooling rate of aeroplane bits. WOeva

i have plaz coating and use it (when i ride), i think it works great, no complaints here at all... none. if you used it you wouldn't have any either.
