Hey all. I'm looking for some new rubber. Currently I ride a Mich. 2.5" 24.1 in the rear and I'm looking for something a bit smaller. The 2.5 rubs my chainstays and i'd like to find omething fairly burly in the 2.35 to 2.4 range.
Questions:
Are the Try-All tires good? Why?
Are Panaracer DH Fire beefy?
How about the Tioga DH 2.3?
Any other suggestions for a big guy who rides angry and needs a 2.4 max size tire?
I want insane grip with a fair amount of pinch protection on a lively feeling tire in the neighborhood of 26-32 psi.
Thanks in advance!
The Try-all is smaller then my 2.5 Hot s was on Try-all rims.
I think Michelins are a bit oversized.
And yes a Sticky is a good tyre, but a little bit heavy (1350g)

Tryall or Maxxis in the 2.3 area are both lively. If you want real grip.. stay away from PanaracerDH.. and unless you want to smack yourself in the head with a large rock.. don't go near the Tioga.

How oversized is the 2.2 24.1? Is it equivalent to say, your average 2.35" tire? I love the Michelin i have, 2.5, it's a monster. On a related note, how much smaller are other 2.5's than the mich? Would the Michelin be the biggest/widest/tallest 2.5 tire out there? I can't go wider, but i can go taller. If the michelin is that much bigger than others then i can easily go 2.5 in something else.
It seems the Tioga is a love it/hate it tire. Some ppl jizz over it while others piss on it.
What about the front? I need both, but the front can be anything sizewise, just name the best damn front tire on the planet for a big aggressive rider.
The El Gato was the worst POS tire i've ever seen. I rode it for a week, and every single ride ended up with me completely ripping the tire clean off the rim so bad that a few times my tube got caught in my brakes, and one time actually broke brake parts when tire and tube went through between the brake and rim. I wanted to burn it and piss on it but my friend wanted to ride it so i gave it to him to use as a front.

Oh yeah, i should add that the critical thing is that the tire doesn't fold easily. I sideload the bastard superhard when i gap big and twist to stretch it,, and 180 ups. Even my michelin folds when i go 180 to rear but it folds in a controllable way, where i can corrective hop and stay on rear. The El Crapto would surprise me and do something different every time.

What are your thoughts on the Nokian Gaz 2.3 or the NBX? I can handle a heavy tire if it does the job. Also has anyone tried a Kenda Kolossal? They're on sale for $5 right now. The Kinetics look like they'd be a nice trials tire with the block tread, but could they survive some twisting and sideloading?

works for ryan leech, then again, his norco frame is a love hate affair as well.
kenda kinetics will be my next r&d set,..
maxxis tends to be undersized, so if i were you i'd try their 2.5 in a double ply super tacky
grippy, reliable, confidince inspireing, blah, blah, blah, it rides itself :)

My kendas have real hard rubber compared to my maxxis minion 2.7. I think theyd be a good street tire.

I'm gonna go Michelin again. Thanks guys!
I'm also thinking of a Kenda Kinetic 2.6 sticky up front. Is that overkill for a 265lb rider wanting to gap to front?

Okay, I went 2.35 up front, Kenda Kinetics.

Maxxis Minion Super Tacky DH Dual ply 2.35. Turn it the wrong way round, and it's superb. Loads of grip, and superb pinch protection. Eg. I've never had a pinch on any of my 2 Maxxis tyres.
Awesome

I've been using the Tioga and i'm fine with it. Ironically, the tread pattern of Maxxis creepy crawlers are the same as the Tioga's.

the tioga is straight out of 1999, if you have used it since then you need to open your eyes....unless you are riding a square tubed monty stock with hs11s.

i dont like the tioga but i havent had any problems with it. if yo uhave money i wouldnt suggest it(it folds off the rim, people say it pinchflats easily) i havent got a pinchflat except for yesterday but other than that its been good.

if i were to get a new tire for the rear, i need a tire that can last quite awhile withought wearing out really fast but is still fairly grippy and not too expensive. the try all one looks cheaper than the maxxis ones and ive heard some good reviews on it. i just need something that doesnt roll off the rim like my tioga does and i dont have much money. what to do?

What frame do you ride? I have a Woodman T-Comp that I was thinking about putting a Michelin Comp 24.1 2.5" on and now I'm concerned that it won't fit. Does anyone know if it will fit? If not, can someone measure the height and width of one of these tires so I can compare it to my frame?

Mike, I have a 1995 Specialized Stumpjumper size small. Steel, XC bike with 16.75" stays, 1050mm with a PX knifen long. The 2'5 just barely fits but when my rim flexes it makes moto sounds. I want a bit more clearance to allow for being out of true a bit.

are you looking at them with your eyes?
i prefer to use black rubber tires. usually ones with knobs on them. i dont understand why tire stuff comes up so much.

I had this OOOLLDDDD ass monty 219 before the one that I have now. It was so old it had some xtr central pull cantilevers and it was rockin' pink monty stickers. It also had one of those crazy ass old forks. I broke the frame on that sumbitch.

Can people not understand? If you want to try something else, go ahead, if you want something that is known to be awesome, get a maxxis or a michelin.

Well, I should be getting the Michelin soon. As for the Kenda, they're out of stock, so i may just wait till nxt month and get a second Mich for the front, maybe the Hot S, or maybe a 24.1 light 2.2.

i had 2.5 minion super tacky on rear and changed to 2.5 try-all lately. the air space in try-all is noticeably smaller which gives you a bit less "suspension". the profile of try-all is also more round so it gets some time to get used to especially on small technical stuff. another thing is the rebound that the tire gives. the rebound of try-all is actually a bit slower than with minion, which seems to suit my riding style especially on static gaps.
btw, try-all front tire is horrible! it's really skinny so you have to pump it more. it also doesn't roll for shit so short run ups become a real pain. so i switched back to hot s 2.1 on front although it could be grippier especially in wet conditions.

I know maxxis tends to be smaller than actually marked on the tyre...so does anybody know the width of a 2.35 maxxis on a 47mm rim? How is it compared to a C24 2.2? I'm going to take one of them... the 2.5 versions are a little overkill
