UCI section taping/bunting.

I was wondering whether anyone had hurt themselves at any level on the stakes used for bunting sections in UCI comps?

I believe we used to use them here in Aus. but we stopped because the organisers thought it was too dangerous. I wanted to start using them again because it makes the sections look good and makes them easier to maintain, rather than having bunting all over the ground/tied around rocks/trees etc.

i have never seen a single person hurt from the stakes... at least they would have been hurt anyways from falling- but not from the stakes alone. unless you have them pointy end up i dont see the problem. for a few events i did with pancho here, we had to use re-bar.... how much rediculously un-safer is that?!

i saw in one of the graz videos i think it was day 2 where one guy goes t ohop off a barrel type thing and his back wheel hits a steak and it slides out from under him and he falls on his back. other than that though nothing.

stakes should be seen as part of the section just as much as the stack of kegs, pellets, rocks, loose dirt, maybe even innocent spectators....

I've found a better solution. I realize you're in Australia so I'm not sure where you might find these, though. I use "garden stakes" from Lowes. They're just a metal rod of about 5mm diameter that come in various lengths and have a flattened loop at the top. They're typically used to support a plant during its growth. The half meter ones cost about US$0.66 and the one meter ones cost US$0.99. They're a lot easier to stick in and pull out of the ground and if you fall on them, the loop keeps it from poking you and the rod just bends out of the way.

god knows why i'm posting this. but the reason i asked is because once i had a freak accident when i fell on a stick with my ass. it went in about an inch and was the most painful fucking thing that's ever happened to me. i guess that makes you lucky :o

Hey All,

I actually thought a good thing to use for stakes would be PVC pipe. Like 1 1/2" diameter pipe.... one end cut at angle so it goes into the ground easily..... glue PVC cap on and wha-la. PVC is waaay durable and with cap on top you could bang the heck out of it ..... and it is not pointy, so fear of injure is relieved.

Cool thing about it is that it is cheap, cheap, cheap. Since the stakes would be reusable.... it would be cool if you color coded them depending on level of section (i.e. blue stripe if beginner... red for sport.... no stripe [white] for expert and pink for pro [always wanted to make PROs deal with pink.... blah, ha, ha] .... anyway, you get the point).

Get big ass duffle bag for them all...... and there you go..... fast food trials course.
