so i need some input and i would rather get it from you people than some uptight stiff at my school. im looking to do a study abroad program here at the university of colorado (because i hate it here, blah blah blah) and i want to go to australia.
the film program here has an extension in canberra with the australian national university and two in sydney (unsw and macquarie).
just trying to gague "locals" views on the schools and such. im probably going to end up there anyways but wanted to get your input to consider as well. thanks guys!

anu is apparently the best uni in australia, but its hard to just say something like that because they all have their strengths and weaknesses. I dont really know anything about the media side of things, but unsw is also a good university, i dont know as much about macquarie but i think its not as prestigeous as unsw but still fairly good.
I think the biggest difference will be between living in canberra and living in sydney. canberra has a population of about 300 000, sydney is about 2 or 3 million (i think). canberra is much more trials friendly, but both sydney and canberra have great trials scenes. Sydney is on the coast, canberra isnt, although canberra is a couple of hours away from a few ski resorts if you're into that sort of thing.
i always thought canberra was on the coast. herrm. do the ski areas do the DH biking thing in the summer? that would be neat.
ive always wanted to come down to canberra for a few myself. have fun keveen.
Simonk
01-26-2005, 04:50 PM
yeah dh is pretty big in thredbo in summer i think, ive never done it myself but they have pretty big races there
canberra is 2 hours drive from the nearest beach, thats probably its biggest downfall

someone told me sydney is kind of like paris in that the touristy areas are nice but the rest is kinda grungy- is this true? i guess it doesnt matter to me but whatevs. i guess i have no real perspective of how big aus really is and where stuff is relative to other stuff.... wow, that came out smart.

canberra is a city born out of an argument when sydney and melbourne where arguing about whch one would be the national capital they couldn't decide so they made canbera in between, seriously thats what happned. but it's a nice place cold in winter so you won't be too homesick.
sydney has over 4 million i think becaus it's spose to be larger than Melbourne and we broke 3 a while ago i think canberra would be more CO like and as a bonus it is the Porn capital of Aus they even bus in yokals from around Aus to do sex toy tours, so you'll have plenty of oppurtunity to practice your filmmaking images/smilie/naughty.gif

sydney is just like any other city some places are better than others not as lets say defined as Paris, and less thieving gypsies :bigthumb:. forget uni and just come live in Melbourne most trials nicest city much beer :Sonic:

To put things in perspective, to drive from Melbourne to Canberra takes about 8 hours H-core. Canberra and Sydney both have really cool trials people.
Im from Melbourne and we are all either gay or stupid. :bigthumb:
You really must visit us in Melbourne wherever you end up.

holy shit, one inch equals 8 hours driving?! not like maps of england where one inch equals one minute driving. jeebus. i guess it may come down to price on where i end up. canberra is bling compared to one of the ones in sydney. melbourne doesnt have an extension with the film program here, boo-urns.
as soon as i made that last post i thought 'well i could just look at a map...' yeah im smart... pfft.
if i do go i will likely spend an extra month or two before or after the semester just livin in up south of the equator. it will be grand. thanks for all you guys' input so far!

Oh yes, lets all forget about Adelaide, they don't exist, they just have the best trials competition in Australia.....
We have 3 universites (that i know of) over here, namely University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University. I don't know much about the last 2, but i don't think any of them have much in the way of film
WhiteRavenKS
01-26-2005, 07:49 PM
yeah, i looked into that and i dont have any programs in adelaide. oh wells.
You probably wouldnt want to go to Adelaide anyway. All the Tasmanians just swam over and imported their inbred ways to the SA population. Its a terrible thing.
Jokes, SA is loverly.

From what i know, the best uni in Aus to do any sort of film media is UTS (University of Technology in Sydney?) so if your uni doesn't do an extension with them then i would say you're best bet is the ANU. I'm a little biased because i want to make a film with you but i think the other uni's are not going to offer any real benefits over the ANU for media. if that made sense and you can't get into UTS then either go to a proper film school or go to the ANU.
tomacropod
01-26-2005, 09:41 PM
if you have a choice of three unis and one of them is the ANU, go there. I go there. I love it, it's great. If you choose to live in Sydney you will get less accomodation for your money and I agree, most of Sydney is fairly dodgy. I don't like it at all. Canberra is a city/town of about 200,000 but it's physically large, there's very little high density housing and the average income is the highest in Australia, it's a top quality place and has plenty of cultural...stuff...and if you want to see a big band that isn't coming past, you can drive to Sydney in three hours for a day trip.

UNSW is pretty sick to ride in!! If your into natty, canberra will bore you pretty quick... Sydneys coast is covered in rocks! sandstone.
If you go west yes sydney is shithouse! full of white trash and wogs who think they are gangsters... Stay near the coast (unsw is in randwick/kingsford 1km from ocean) and sydney is great! Canberra has got more riders yes, but they arent near Aykay (australias most enjoyable rider to watch!) I ride with him once a week usually.

Aykay i swear is an Australia Eddie Tongue, can watch him for hours on natty, no one can argue that. You may have the privelige of seeing him ride in the flesh one day...
Bus yes he does lack the big ups and gaps. But still a joy to watch, even dickey and joe were saying "fuck that guy is good"
Enough about how much i wanna have Aykays children, Kevin.... if your a natty man, come to sydney. Oh and we might start callin ya Kev or Kevvo! Kev son. who knows what you will adopt. hehe

do what you think is best schoolwise, canberra and sydney are both so close to each other you could easily travel to the other one every weekend. canberra will be nicer and cheaper to live but it doesnt have a beach. i think the ANU will be a better Uni aswell. If you need me to sway you one way or another for the riding side of things then let me know. i'll give you a preview, canberra wins on the riding front, both spots to ride, frequency of rides and number of riders, canberra also wins on the school front. nightlife is shit though.
WhiteRavenKS
01-27-2005, 07:06 PM
thats fine, my nightlife-ing isnt too exciting anyways, its mostly comprised of me sitting in front of my computer editing and bathing in music.
oh and peace- my closest friends already call me kev and kevo but it wouldnt hurt to evolve a new one seeing as how i would be on the other side of the planet.
the more i learn about this stuff the more im leaning to canberra. the schools in sydney are pretty spendy through this study abroad program. as it is i cant afford this whole deal anyways. i cant wait, this should be awesome.
Peace
01-27-2005, 07:12 PM
yes nightlife eats balls but they have sick urban riding! which can also mean after a while you will get over it.... UNSW is so close to so many Natural spots and is an Urban spot in itself, my mate simon (SLB) lives next door to it.
If you want to have fun, go to the beach, ride endless natural, see really really hot chicks topless on the beach.... go sydney. a lot of us are moving places a lot of the time so even accommodation could be sorted out.
Canberra is fuckin awesome to go on trips to! Also on most of my days off i go on day trips up the coast to some really nice beach natty places, so you go for a ride and get fuckin exhausted, then mosey on back to the beach to cool off, nothing better. hehe i should really write a book about this.
Sure uni is important, but if your deciding JUST on uni, then stay home.... but if your comin over with riding and havin fun (with alcohol and women) in mind. Then sydney is ya best bet.
Peace
edit: you will evolve a nightlife if you come to sydney, UNSW has the uni bar/ roundhouse... which is good thrusdays and tends to get quite a lot of gigs on the w/e also ofcourse you get discounts on booze...

01-27-2005, 08:06 PM
you can get to any riding spot in Canberra within 30 mins. To get to some Sydney ride spots, even if you live there, is a day trip. I'm going for a week down to the south coast from the 7-14 february so I'll be looking out for coastal natural that's worth a Canberra day trip. I think that will be the next step for Canberratrials. Embracing corrosion.
Oh that's one other good thing about Canberra, no saltwater corrosion. Nightlife isn't so bad, but I'm not all that into it myself. Much less likely to get mugged than in Sydney.
You have no shortage of places to stay until you get yourself sorted if you decide to come Kevin.
edit: Hydro, I think we're mostly fighting over the seemingly endless trail of near-perfect used bike components Kevin leaves behind.

I don't think it applies to him, and I think that there are now very few US states where the age is 21. I doubt that Colorado is one of them. Texas is, but it doesn't seem to help them.

Haha you could go to ADFA but you might have to be an Aussie to do that. Thats the army uni or wateva it is. Thats in Canberra. The best UNI's i know of here in melbourne are monash uni and melbourne uni and the main campuses of them are fucking huge.
edit: go to a uni tahts in the city like melbourne uni is here then you can live on campus and go into the city everynight and that would be awesome.

01-27-2005, 09:18 PM
omg those were a few low hits joel. no places in sydney are a day trip, in fact you can travel from maroubra to vaulcluse riding and make it a day trip... fuck thats a long ride, but natural all the way along. Pretty much got sydney mapped out now and the riding spots are very close, just gotta know where they are.
I have been in sydney 5 years now, not once have i gotten in a fight or been mugged.... go west and im sure the stakes will raise... west is shit i dont even like to call it sydney... Another thing, salt water corrosion is a myth , unless your bike is made of magnesium.... or you leave your bike submerged in salt water for a long time.
Not fighting for kevin, just saying if i were to come halfway around the world and had canberra and sydney as options.... sydney is the better experience! Thats what life is about.

Kevin I would worry about your education/course first. Either city has good riding and good riders. I like Canberra because its a small city, the riders are close together. They manage to find spots to ride all over the place. I also like Sydney because its a big city, as one pizza pie has said there are beaches everywhere. Which means lots of rock riding :) Oh and the nightlife will grow on you.
UNSW is a nice, up to date place. Good riding in there.. but i will admit its a big place and intimidating if you don't know anyone. I know a few people that go there, they don't mind it.
Macquarie is a bitch to get to. I know people that go there from here and in that same time I can get to my uni at Wollongong (about 1 hr from Syd, 1.5 hrs from Canb). Plus its out west and blah.

A yankee's perspective who lived in NSW for a year and Canberra for a year:
Kevin, Canberra is a good choice. If I remember right, the layout of the city was designed by an American? There are also hills and mountains nearby unlike Sydney. You have bike paths going everywhere so it's easy to get around on a bike, and public transportation is good in both Canberra and Sydney. I think there's even a train that goes between Canberra and Sydney. A train can get you anywhere in Sydney.
It does get cold in the winter, but not as cold as CO. I hardly ever wore a coat the whole time I was in Australia. You run brakes moto style right? That's good because they do down under too.
You're right about the good looking tourist areas and ghetto areas. But Canberra isn't as bad. Like the other guys were saying, Sydney coast is great, but go further West and it can get scary. I lived in Cambelltown, Liverpool, Hurstville areas and I had to go knocking on people's doors (mormon missionary), yeah some fun times with some crazy people.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to go back and visit sometime, there are some great places that are unlike anything you'll never see in the U.S., and the people for the most part are really friendly and laid back. Watch out for the annoying flies that buzz in your ears.
