Hey all, for the past year I've been riding a Mavic D521 in the rear. It has been super tuff, but lately I've been riding more aggressively. Is there a tuffer rim out there than the Mavic? I'd like to go wider when the time comes for a new rim, but i really do need something tuff.

Thanks

Elan, I've been "polishing my toptube" to the looks of that rim, when I first saw it I almost shit myself. But, it only comes in 36h and i'm running 32h on my Surly.

Is a DX32 as tuff as the d521? Does the extra width help it survive better? I'd liek to get something that weighs under 3lbs an is not drilled. I mostly have problems with my seam separating, on the Mvic it's welded, and it's been holding well. The only reason I'm considering a new rear rim is because the Mavic has a few dents and spots where the braking surface is filded outwards and it makes both pads rub at the samr time cause it's widened out. I think by this spring the mavic will have lived it's full life and if it lives that long, i'd like to retire it and freshen up the rear. If there's a better rim than the Mavic i'd like to try it out.

ViZ rims are sweet.

They look sweet, but are they strong?

And yeah, i'd ride a steel rim if i can find one. The only one i found was the FUNN 48 hole steel monster.

Viz rims are exactly the same alloy as try-all rims, in other words not very though, but nice in their own wide way.

Arrow Racing DHR's are supposedly indestructible. That's probably the only good thing about them though.

Best bet would be to stick with your D521. If you want wider, undrilled DX32, Onza Ronnie, or Echo rim should be your considerations :)

dx-32s are pretty impressive and pretty inexpensive, worth a try i would say.

I just switched from a Mavic free ride rim to a alex dx 32 rim a few weeks ago (not drilled). Mainly because the Mavic rims are so skinny. Anyway, I really like the dx 32 so far and the weight is worth the width and strength.

The Mavics must have a better braking surface because with my old rims I never had to grind them but the Alex rim slipped alot and needed a grind but other than that I think it's a great rim.

I don't think the Arrow rims have a braking surface though, I'm running v's in the rear. I just wish i could get something as hard as the mavic but wider, my mavic has been awesome except for a bit of tirefolding.

sorry to kinda highjack the thread. how strong are the drilled 26' dx 32 rims with 1' drill holes. ive seen some and theyve flat spotted very easily. theres tons of flat spots in them. how strong are yours?

1" holes are over kill unless you're one hell of a smooth rider.
I wouldn't go any bigger than 3/4". But you're welcome to try, would definitely save more weight.
I only did 9/16" holes....mainly because I didn't feel like spending 35$ on a 3/4" drill bit for one rim.

There are no rims stronger than the 521's. Problem being they are too thin to be used with most current trials frames without some crazy brake mount modifications. The DX32s are stronger thnan the tryall and the Azonics may oneday be proven but cost a theigh and a gizzard.

There are wider mavics but they have no braking surface.

Or they only come in 20", like the XY rims or whatever they called. I'd give a left nut for one of those in 26", any takers?

XY's also come in a 24" version as well. Not that its any help to you. Just thought i'd mention that.
