18:12 or 18:13 are very popular.

If you ride 18:12 one rotation of the cranks leads to 1,5 rotations of the backwheel.
18:13 --> 1,38.
With 16:12 it's only 1,33.

I'm currently running 17:13 which is even less than 16:12 (1,31).
If you got only little run up it's great, but for moves that require some power (big gaps or ups) a bigger gear is much better. This is why I'll go back to 18:13 soon.

I run 20-15 which is the same as 16-12. I find it much better for natty than 18-12.

when i first got my monty i had 16-12, it felt really nice at first because i still had little weak legs, but eventually it seemed to stop working and my ups andgaps were halted. now ive got 18-12 and i think its great, but it sucks on natural, so im getting a 13t cog soon

I read somewhere that Ben Savage uses 20-12 or something like that.

I run a 20-14 because thats the smallest rear cog the stealth hub uses. Its right between 18-12 and 16-12 and I like it a lot, but if I had to choose I would go back to 18-12 if I could.

18-12 with stock monty cranks(i think they're 158)

I havent found it to be any problem, but i havent tried anything else yet. might go to a 13 when i replace my rear cog.

My rear cog is from a road/track bike shop. Its a dura ace and cost about 25 bucks canadian.

its not recommended to use a "normal" track cog on a trials bike because they have fewer threads and can strip out/round off the hub or crank. tryall, monty, and echo track cogs have a wider base to prevent that. webcyclery, trialsin and factionbike all sell track cogs

hey Bob,

Unless you live here in Calgary it probably won't be too helpful hehe

Note on the echo cogs. my 12 tooth echo cog that came with my team was kinda wack. I broke 4 teeth in two weeks then i broke another 4 or so trying to get it off the hub

rhinos, gotta love em ! My recommended rhino mod upgrades in order:

first - brakes
second - bar/stem
third - cranks/rear cog

Nah, it's not a rhino. It's a monty x-alp 219 or someshit.
