1: get as close to the wall as you feel comfortable with. some people like to be so clsoe that their pedal is just barely clearing the wall when trackstanding, som like to be liek a foot away when they start.

2: do one backwheel hop

3: bend your knees on the compression of the backwheel hop

4: explode upwards

5: lean toward the obstacle the whole time.

6: try and get your front tire on top first, then concentrate on the rear following

7: failing that, resort to watching a video of a side-hop. any number of TRA vids is going to have atleast 9879 sidehops that are too huge to imagine. and FTC4 by andrew tonkery has a really great shot of our local hero, graham wilhelm, executing a good sized side-hop to the top pf a wall.

to get off easily with a few style points.

1: shift your weight onto thefront wheel so you are in the endo position

2: from then kick the rear section of the bike over the edge you are attempting to drop

3: let your rear drop faster than the front,

4: try to land in the same position you would be in when doing a rearwheel hop.

5: bend at the knees to absorb any harsh vibrations that may occur during the execution of such stunts.

if yur havin trouble sidehopping up...then side hop without your bike...to get the feel of what you are trying to do...cause you are doing the same thing by crouching, then exploding up, and lifting your legs.

Elans advise is spot on. Before I knew how to sidehop to front, I was so scared of side hopping ANYTHING, even without a derailleur and tensioner that was out of the way. I knew I could sidehop up, it was just teh timing....find a comfortable distance (like Elan said). Mine is like 1 inch past my bar end. Now, all I do is sidehops to front 1st. You'll be able to get to higher objects cause your front wheel doesn't have to travel as far, and you basically see-saw your weight onto the object.
